NV+ (v1) PSU died
Hi ReadyNASians,
So my faithful NV+ died a few days ago due to the PSU overheating. I was greeted with the familiar smell of melted PCB components and found my ReadyNAS powered down and unable to power back up again. I had recently moved the NAS to a new location that had a warmer ambient temperature that must have contributed to the failure. Afterwards I found Yoh-dah's post / service advisory (http://bit.ly/MEBCzt) which i had been blissfully ignorant of for 5 years. I am probably one of the minority of users here who bought their ReadyNAS from Infrant (in Australia), not Netgear.
I did call Netgear for support after I read the advisory. I gave them the serial number which they said was actually an NV, not an NV+ :S. I also mentioned the advisory on the PSU, but they would not offer any help. It's probably to old anyway.
So I followed the advice at Bott's blog (http://bit.ly/NRFSb4) and was very easily able to mount and access the drives http://i48.tinypic.com/122ya7m.jpg.
I did try a couple ATX 1.x PSU's to power up the NAS in the course of troubleshooting until I learned that ReadyNAS PSU's were wired differently.
So from here I am slowly recovering my data and I am pondering the following questions/courses of action. Your recommendations please.

- Is that service advisory still valid? I'm not so inclined to chase Netgear about it given the age of the unit, but am I entitled to any support for this anymore?
- My ReadyNAS's mainboard and drive bay card appear ok. Could I buy a replacement PSU (I saw some on Amazon) and expect it to work ok?
- It looks like I will be in the market for a new ReadyNAS if the option above is not viable. Should i go with an NV+ v2 (or something better?) and will the drives from my old sparc NV+ slot in and gain access to the old array and data?

While there is a warranty discussion, the guideline to us in Tech support is that the blown
PSU's should be replaced regardless of age.
Yes, I have seen PSU's on eBay.
Rgds, Marto
Does that apply to support cases on my.netgear? These PSU's don't seem to exist in the UK at the moment, and because I'm (just) out of warranty the guys at my.netgear have made it very clear that they can't even sell me the damn thing, let alone replace it FOC.
All of which is pretty depressing, as the one thing you want from a NAS unit is long term supportability, rather than a bespoke PSU which seems to be utterly unavailable with 4 years of buying the damn thing. - steveoelliottLuminaryI purchased a spare for mine some time ago when they were more readily available. You may be able to find one for sale but they aren't cheap, they weren't even then.
- ahnlakAspirantOh excellent. Misco now tell me that the PSU is "end of life" and therefore unsuppliable.
Starting to think I should have just built a Linux server; at least then parts would be readily available. - steveoelliottLuminaryWell I've seen them available online but generally in excess of £100!
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt is possible to modify a standard ATX supply.
This old thread might be helpful: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=18694 - ahnlakAspirantOften listed, but never in stock. I've just got a response back from Netgear confirming that "the device is end of life", and there are "no plans to produce more of these supplies".
I find that an astounding response for what is not exactly an ancient product line, and raises some hard questions about the longevity of any of their devices. - ahnlakAspirant

Indeed, and that's what I've resorted to, but it's hardly an ideal solution - my spare ATX supply is about the same size as the unit and I've had to fashion a new backplate to accomodate the cabling. - Marto731AspirantTo the NV+v1 users.
I have to take back what I said on 12th March last.
Alot of the earlier posts above date from 2012.
The v1 Chassis is end of life, and you won't be able to buy Sparc v1 NAS in the shops.
Depending on when the v1 was bought, warranty is 3 or 5yrs, more often 3yrs.
April 2013
I have a customer where his power supply is blown. I can't replace as its outside his 3 yrs
warranty. He is willing to buy a supply, and has tried a number of UK resellers, incl
Misco UK, where it is out of stock.
Netgear are placing a last time order to the China/ Far East supplier to stock up the
RMA reserves. I want to make enquiries about how Netgear can trigger resellers to
stock these PSU's. I can't give promises or commits on this, and am meeting inertia.
I've seen prices on eBay go to £170 UK pounds.
So, for those of you with NV+ v1's can you check your warranty cover, retain your
Invoice/ Proof of purchase ( not on NAS !!) and have
your valuable data backed up to a 2nd source.

There is a post somewhere on the forum about what you'd need to do rewire a standard PSU (do at own risk and only if you are comfortable with messing with stuff like that).
Where is this post?
