ReadyNAS 422 - SMB share and MacOS

ReadyNAS 422 with 6.9.3

Creating SMB share "test-share" (SMB),  adding R/W permissions for "user1" and "user2".

Computer 1 - Win10:               user1 connected to test-share

Computer 2 - MacOS Sierra (the same from newSierra):  user2 connected to test-share

There is a small text file "test.txt" prepared on desktops of both computers.

Now the problem:

1) test.txt is copied to test-share (does not matter from which computer) - everything is OK, file is on test-share and visible

2) User1 from Win10 is deleting test.txt - everything is OK - file disappears on both computers (Explorer on Win10 and Finder on Mac)

3) User2 on Mac is trying to copy test.txt from desktop (prepared file) to test-share - ERROR:

   - message, that file is already there and question, if I want to replace, cancel or keep both

   - If choosing Replace option (just for test), ERROR - Operation cannot be finished - there is already item with the name "" (empty name)

It looks SMB protocol on Mac is not correcty updating information from the share.

Another symtoms:

- problem disappears, if test-share is re-mounted on the Mac

- problem disappears, if test.txt is copied back to test-share from Win10, after that it is possible to copy test.txt from Mac desktop to test-share, choosing option "Replace" and everything is OK

Terrible, because it is imposible to share files on test-share.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

  • Have you tried AFP on the MacOS system, and see if it behaves the same way?

No, not testing this behavior with AFP, because AFP is generating another issues while working with files from MS Office 2011 on network share .

I'm not a Mac user, but I have occasionally seen stale file lists in file explorer (more common with SSD disks in the PC than with the NAS though).  But your case looks different, because the Mac shows an up-to-date folder to the user (without the deleted file), but then gets confused when you try to do the copy.

Do you have a way to test if this also happens with 2 Macs or 2 PCs?

Also, I suggest toggling the strict-sync setting for the test share, and perhaps also the enhance MacOS setting too.
