Readynas 6 Plus destroys volume after shut down with 4.2.19

Just a quick warning for someone who is using the new firmware 4.2.9 x86 (drives 3+ TB) and the new Hitachi 4 TB (3.7TB) drives in 6 slot configuration.
I followed the instruction and did test it 3 times and everything seems to work to the moment you shut down the Readynas 6 plus.
It takes about 5 minutes booting with "Readynas" on the display and than it does a factory resets and re-volume all 6 HDD's to a new volume.
WHAT A NIGHTMARE! I was thinking what happen when you have all your data on this unit and you keep expanding to a certain size and there goes your data ... the unit reformats all your drives ....

I called support and all the ask me is to re-install OS3. In my company they would pull the firmware when something like this happens! Support told me it is not on there support list but why offering a firmware with support for more than 3 TB and caveat that you have to create the volume with all drives installed to go over 16 TB and when it goes bad they tell you this is not supported? The firmware is out for 2 month. Is Netgear using his customers as ALPFA tester without letting them know?

  • I noticed that this only happens when I shut down the ReadyNAS 6 PLUS. Reboot seems to work just fine. AWhen shut down and turn on after 2 minutes the ReadyNAS shows "READYNAS" for 3 minutes and that "factory reset" and starts within 10 minutes to create the "C" volume. I am trying right now with 5 disc only (14 TB) to see if this is related to the 16 TB expanding limitiation. The release note says you can go over 16 TB when all 6 disc are ii and factory reset is done. Does anyone here has his redyNAS running with 18 TB? (6x4TB)

After removing all HDD's except one in slot one I still have the same problem so my conclusion is that the Readynas will not work with Hitachi 4TB (3.7) at all or my unit is defective. I am going to return it to Fry's and hope that will solve this case.
  • Sky-chicken - the problem is not with the NAS or the OS. It is with the untested/unapproved 4TB drives you are trying in the NAS.

These forums are full of admonitions to only use drives that are on the HCL list. The users guide should have referred you to only use drives that are on the HCL. Not all 1TB drives are on the list, nor are all 2TB or 3TB drives, yet we know that some of them are. We know also that when one uses non-approved drives, data loss is a definite possibility, which is why the cautionary warning.

Some drives react poorly when subjected to the synchronization of drives necessary to utilize the RAID configuration.

I do remember one of our members who is very experienced pulled the array of drives and tried at least one 4TB drive pulled from the enclosure (it was sold as an external drive) and did not have any problems with it. However, I believe it was a solo drive and do not think it was a Hitachi. We have had members have problems with 1.5TB drives even though the 1TB and 2TB versions were on the list but the 1.5TB version was not. This is why the HCL exists and why the staff spends the money and the time to extensively test drives. The member who tried the solo 4TB also ran the disk test from the boot menu several times.
  • I have 2 of the seagate 4tb drives and they have been working fine.

It could be something specific to the hitachi 4tb (I didnt even know they had a 4tb drive out), or it could be something to do with over 16tb.

    Let me get this straight...

you have 6x 4tb hitachi drives
you put all 6 drives in the ULTRA PLUS 6
factory default with all 6 drives
    wait for resync to complete
after resync and frontview > volume indicates 'redundant' and you have about 18tb of usable space
you power off the nas (not reboot)
you turn on the nas, then it starts factory default all over again?

what happens if you just put in ONE 4tb drive and factory default?

what happens if you just put in ONE *NON 4tb* drive and factory default?
  • TeknoJnky - thanks for joining in. I quickly tried to find your post, but was unable to do so quickly, and I had to leave for a meeting.
