ReadyNas DUO Windows slow performance - unuseable
I just install a ReadyNAS DUO on our network. Our network has a Linksys WRT54g wireless router, two laptops running XP, one laptop running VISTA and one laptop running WINDOWS7. We are getting terrible performance on "ALL PC's" when we transfer files to/from the NAS. For instance, it is taking almost a minute to open a 2MB JPEG or to drag/drop from the NAS to a PC.
We have tried the MTU adjustments that were mentioned in this forum but nothing is improving.
I have to believe that something is not setup correctly with the NAS or the wireless router since this is happening on all the Laptops. I realize that our router is limited to 100Mb but we are not getting near that performance. When transferring files we are getting between 30KB and 80KB rates. Please help....this setup is presently useless. Thanks for your assistance.

- dbott67GuideDid you follow these instructions: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=226
Also, can you tell us what sort of performance you're getting over a wired connection? This will help isolate where the problem may be. - Radioman1Aspirant

Yes those are the exact instructions I followed when adjusting the MTU parameter.
Over a wired connection the performance great. The pictures open up and transfer almost instantaneously.
I did notice some lag time when transferring the first file when I navigatge to a new folder. I assume that has to do with some sort of cacheing but
after that the performance is fabulous.
So are you thinking this is an issue with the WiFi? - dbott67Guide

It appears like it. If performance on wired was poor, it may have been hardware-related (bad disk, bad NIC, bad chassis, etc.) but the NAS performs as expected, which is a good sign.
Next steps:
1. Check Frontview > Network > Interfaces > Show Errors and post the results:Network Errors [Ethernet 1+2]
TX packets 3064838
TX errors 0
TX dropped 0
TX overruns 0
TX carrier 0
RX packets 2044427
RX errors 0
RX dropped 0
RX overruns 0
RX frame 0
Collisions 0
2. Double-check MTU settings:
- NAS should be 1500 (reboot NAS just to be sure)
- Vista/Win7 wireless devices should be 1430
Here's what kind of performance to expect for various types of connections: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=363. You should get 2-3 MB/s for wireless G.
3. If performance is still poor on wifi, try changing ReadyNAS MTU to 1492.
4. If you can, I would recommend borrowing another wifi router to rule out the router as the source of the problem. - Radioman1AspirantHere is the list of errors. Are the TCP retransmits from WiFi collisions?
Auto-negotiation 0
Bad packets 0
Disconnect 0
False carrier 0
Idle errors 0
Link failures 0
Receive errors 0
Symbol errors 0
VLAN tags 0
TCP Retransmits 2589
Unrecovered TCP Retransmits 121
I retried all the MTU settings and unfortunately I'm getting the same results.
Appreciate your assistance. Not sure what else to do but ship it back???? Do you know if anyone has had success using the DUO with a LinkSys WRT54g router? - Radioman1AspirantThe ReadyNas performance issue has been resolved. In the previous posts we determined that the issue was related to the wireless connections. I looked closely at my Linksys WRT54G router and discovered the firmware was really old. I updated the firmware in the router and the ReadyNas performance was > 2MB on the XP machines. I had to perform the MTU adjustment for the VISTA machine and everything seems to be working just fine. So it seems that the I had 2 issues (1) The Linksys Router Firmware (2) The MTU issue with the VISTA machine.
Thanks for your help. :D - dbott67Guide
