ReadyNAS not being recognized by the network
I have had the readynas ultra for a year, it has worked flawlessly. But last week it suddenly dropped off the network. I do not see the readynas on the system. All other network devices are available. I have rebooted my router (linksys e4200), and have tried to assign a specific ip address to the readynas' Mac id. But no effect. I briefly saw the shares at one point, so the data is there. The led lights have been bizarre as well. At one point I had no lights, but now I have all the appropriate lights, and the Ethernet port on the drive is flashing green, gigabit speed. The power light is blue, the hard disk light is green ( I only have one disk). Raidar will also not recognize the drive. For the life in me I cannot figure out the issue. All the lights are appropriate, but there is no recognition that the drive is attached. Can I attach it directly to the computer's Ethernet port and then see if Raidar will recognize it, is this a way to troubleshoot? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDirectly connecting the NAS to your PC will work. If you are using DHCP with the NAS it will fail over to IP 192.168.168.168. If you set your PC address to 192.168.168.100 (for instance) you will be able to see the NAS with RAIDar, and also connect to it with your browser or CIFS. There is a guide here: http://sphardy.com/web/readynas/how-to- ... -readynas/
I'd say it is worth a try, though it does not seem likely that you have a network problem from your description (unless the NAS NIC card has failed, in which case direct connect will fail too). I would focus more on the disk.
If you have a spare disk, you can try (a) powering down the nas, (b) removing your current disk, (c) putting in the new one. If the NAS formats the spare and comes up ok, then you likely have a disk failure.
Connecting your current disk up to your PC (SATA or USB) would let you see the SMART stats, and run vendor diags on the disk (non-destructive). - nanibAspirantThank you Stephen. I will work through those diagnostics coming weekend, and share the results. I was thinking along those lines, but the ip address pearl was a key piece, and thanks for that. I will look at the report as well.
- nanibAspirantOkay so I tried the direct connect - set my client to 192.168.168.100 in the ipv4 settings with the subnet 255.255.255.0. I rebooted the NAS but was unable to access it with the web browser or with Raidar with the default address 192.168.168.168. (I used this method because the NAS was configured to get its ip address from the DHCP server). So now I am wondering if the NAS NIC has bit the dust. The ethernet lights in the back of the NAS are now not coming on as well. Any thoughts?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI suspect you are likely correct. The ultra has 2 ethernet ports - did you try them both? If so, I expect you will need to RMA the unit.
- nanibAspirantYes, tried both ports - with and without the disks, and it was a no go. Spoke to hardware support tonight, and on the RMA train I go. Thanks for all your help. We will do a chassis exchange only first, and see where it takes us. Thanks again.
- HeuerAspirantWelcome to the club! There is something odd about the Ultra and the way it interacts with the network because the NV works fine in the same circumstances. Suggest you insist on going to Level 3 support otherwise you will be pulling your hair out. :?
