ReadyNAS NV+ V2 Firmware SMB 2

A question for the forum, following a recent PC upgrade to the latest major Win10 release, Win10 no longer permits a connection to the shared folders of the ReadyNAS NV+ V2 with an error message stating that Win10 system disallows the connection as it is not secure stating that WIN10 system requires SMB2 or greater, the reason behind this is that the NAS (FW 5.3.13) supports SMB1 and not SMB2 or greater.

My question is this:

Whilst the ReadyNAS 4000V2 is older but still fully functional and trouble free, does Netgear intend to release a firmware patch/upgrade to address this issue and support SMB2 or greater? Or am I looking at a new NAS?

I am aware that SMB1 can be enabled in WIN 10 but I am also aware of the security risk, the Microsoft article link below  provides detail and context:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/file-server/troubleshoot/smbv1-not-installed-by-default-in-windows

Many thanks

    Welcome to the Community!

Unfortunately there are no planned updates on the OS 4 and OS 5 FW anymore. It would be best to check on the newer OS6 firmware and it's models.

You may want to consider the RN4220.

  • While a new NAS is likely a good forward plan, I believe that SMB1, used only on a local home network that is properly secured (no holes punched in the firewall), does not bear the level of risk Microsoft would have you believe.  I'm sure protection from lawsuits is a big part of the reason for the harsh wording.

I agree, though you do need to enable it with both Windows 10 and Catalina MacOS (not sure how to do that with MacOS).

FWIW, the risks are much higher in enterprises.  Microsoft accelerated their deprecation of SMB 1 in response to WannaCry - which did exploit the security weaknesses in the protocol.
