ReadyNAS Pro Business, large fan makes fast ticking noise
I just got a new ReadyNAS Pro Business (RNDP6000-100NAS) with 6 x 2 TB Hitachi HDS722020ALA330. The NAS is mostly quiet, as you would expect, but the large fan at the back of the unit is making a fast ticking noise -- very similar to the noise you'd get if you put playing cards in your bicycle wheel spokes, or the noise of an old filmstrip projector. It sounds like it's ticking about 10+ times per second. The noise isn't loud in volume, but can be distinctly heard above the white-noise of the fan.
As far as I know, it's not the Hitachi drives. I've put my ear all over the unit, and I really hear it when I'm next to the large fan at the back. I shined a flashlight through the fan and there's nothing obvious obstructing the fan.
Any ideas what could be making the noise?

- PapaBear1ApprenticeUsually when I get that noise in a PC it is because a wire is out of place and is being struck by a fan blade. You might want to open the case and check to make sure some loop of wire that you cannot see from the outside is not intruding into the fan space. As long as you do not remove any screw that is covered by a "Do Not Remove" sticker, you warranty will be unaffected. I am not familiar with the construction of the 6 bay frame, but on the 4 bay frame, you remove four screws holding the two side plates in place, slide them slightly to the rear and remove. Then two screws holding the top are removed and the top panel is removed. According to the images on Newegg for the Ultra (same chassis) you can then look straight down behind the fan and see if one of the PSU wires is intruding slightly into the fan space. You do not need to physically remove the back plate holding the large fan in place.
- HibtekAspirantMy Ultra 6 Plus had that a few days ago, not a constant ticking but a ticking, very light just like a cable in there, but not all the time, anyway I opened the side, and checked, no sign of anything anywhere near the fan, any hoo, not wanting to send it back and get a refurbished model!!!!, its only 1 month old, I pushed the fan in the centre (spindle) towards the back, not too hard, but firm, it seemed to move as I would of expeected but also slid a bit like it was not fully on...... but its been a few hours now and no more ticking :-) Yay me. its probably just something internal has moved and is catching hence the ticking.
I for one would rather replace the fan my self then get a refurbished unit after 1 month!!, seems a con for them to send a new unit which is faulty then say yes we can fix it but you will get someone elses returned item which we fixed before!
I would not mind if they gave you half your money back at the same time! - PapaBear1ApprenticeWhile any experienced user of computing devices that has been inside the devices (I have built most of my desktop PCs for the last 20 years) would much rather get a replacement component and do the replacement themselves, unfortunately the experience of most companies is that we are a small minority. The rest are either those who would rather have a device that they just plug in and turn on, or those who have no idea what they are looking at when the open the case.
For that reason, the companies would rather simply replace the unit with a refurbished one that deal with the mess created by someone who has never opened a case before and messes up the replacement.
