ReadyNAS Pro Fan is very noisy

Hi all,

I'm a new user having recently purchased a Pro Pioneer, having read reviews and like the capacity of the system I went an purchased. However despite reading the claims of whisper quiet here:

http://www.readynas.com/?p=711#more-711

I find the system to be very noisy, I can hear the fan blasting away all over my house. It's not a bearing issue or anything like that, its just running at 1500+rpm for the system and 4000+ for CPU. Is this normal? Can the fan speed be lowered?

The system temps are OK, temp1 is usually 41c and temp2 21c.

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks.

Thanks, I spotted that last night and implemented. The wire connector had been run between the mounting posts of the cooling fan so I had to losen the fan. Once done it works well, installing the addon first worked too and saved having two restarts.
  • I had the same problem with my Pro Pioneer - I received it from an online store this week. I see the service notice was issued at the end of April. How long does it take to turn over the inventory on these anyway? My wife was ready the throw the new "vacuum cleaner" out the window until I came across this post.

I installed the add-on in the service notice and switched the fan connector and it seems ok now. I didn't realize the screws holding the cpu fan to the main board would pivot once loosened allowing me to wiggle the connecting wire between the plastic fan housing and the screws, so I ended up taking the whole fan off the board and messing with it for several minutes before realizing that. I assume the thermal grease between the cpu case and fan heatsink is ok now that I have it back on there - it wasn't off for too long.

Seems like a pretty basic QC issue - it started the instant I turned it on. I hope this is not indicative of the rest of my experience with the Pioneer.
  • Past tne noisy fan issue I haven't had any big problems, my main problem is the segate 1.5tb drives I'm using. 2 from 6 have failed.... The Pro hasn't had any problems with handling the loss of the drives (one at a time). Also I see the CPU fan reporting 12k RPM occasionally, clearly a bug as I suspect my ears would blead with the noise from this speed.

In retrospect I should have probably made my own and made a fanless box running OpenFiller or FreeNAS to give me a more flexible platform with a more open Linux build as the base.
  • Several years later, I find this post - what a winner.
I have a pioneer and it is very noisy too.
FrontView shows that the CPU Fan Speed is zero.
I opened it up an there was a huge amount of dust in the cpu heatsink. I removed the fan (it is held in place by tiny claws on its inner edge) and cleaned it up with a small vacco.
The wiring was correct, so I installed the software patch under Add-ons - Add New, and it is all good. I am in love...
