ReadyNAS Ultra 6, Clicking Fan or Drive?

Only had the Utlra 6 for about 2 weeks now and I'm being annoyed by a continuous clicking or scratching sound coming from the back of the unit at the top fan. I've been trying to read the forum posts to figure this out but I'm not seeing anything definite. I have just updated the unit to firmware 4.2.15 (from 4.2.12) and the ticking, scratching, or grinding has slowed to the point it isn't audible all over the house. I'm wondering if maybe this is a bad fan or drive issue? I'm leaning in the direction of a fan because if I turn the unit face down with the fans pointed upward, the sound stops almost completely. This is puzzling and very worrisome since it is a new unit and 3 new drives.

I'm running the ReadyNAS Ultra 6, firmware 4.2.15, with three 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green drives. The drives were on the HCL previously, but a couple posts in the forum suggest that this was in error as they are WDC-WD20EARS-00MVWB0. The drives seem to work fine in the current configuration with ok speeds.

Here is a recording of the noise that I've been hearing for a few days via AudioBoo.

  • Sounds like a cable hitting one of the fans. I'd check those first before looking into if it is a drive or not.

Did you speak with support yet? If not, remove the left side panel (with the fan grill on it). Check the CPU fan right there, see if a cable is nearby that could be playing with it. Same with the back large fan.

If they look okay, another thing to try is power down, remove all disks (label order), and power back on with no disks. Leave it for a bit, see if you can still hear the noise (to rule out the disks causing it).

Btw, I like your introduction in the audio clip.
  • I have exactly the same noise over here, did you resolve this somehow?
  • Did you check for cables hitting a fan? With tight confines in computers and the ReadyNAS it is not frequent, but not uncommon. While I have not had a problem from the factory, I did have it once after reassembly following a thorough cleaning to get the dust out.

If it is reasonably audible and consistent and frequent that may well be the cause. If it is fairly low in noise and sporadic, then it may be a drive. A wire being hit by a plastic fan sound a lot like a playing card that has been attached so it is hit by the spokes of a bicycle wheel (if you ever did that as a kid).
  • Rodney, did you resolve this issue? My Pro has been exhibiting the same annoying noise for a few weeks now and I think I've reached my max annoyance limit with it!
  • In the end for me it disappeared, I opened up the box couple of times, but could find not any wires or so.
If I tapped on the metal on the back with a pen or so , the sound stopped ... I know this is not the way to go, but it lowered my level of annoyance temporarily :-)
