ReadyNAS Ultra 6 plus

Looking to purchase a ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Plus.

Would like to load it with 4tb Hard Drives.

Which drives are recommended? Will I be able to end up with 20TB once one drive is lost to the RAID?

Thanks

There are no 4TB disks on the Hard Disk HCL yet so if you have issues you will be denied support. Suggestion would be to:
    1. Insert one drive
    2. Update to latest RAIDiator
    3. Power down, put rest of disks in and do a factory default: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu

This will give you a clean setup on the latest firmware.

Whilst you could use single-redundancy or RAID-5 to get 20TB before overheads and discrepancy in how space is measured, with that much data I'd use X-RAID2 dual-redundancy or RAID-6.
  • Might I suggest a Pro6 if you are considering the Ultra6. The Pro6 has a faster processor, and while unsupported takes 8GB ram.
    I have a Pro6 with 3x 3TB, and I am extremely happy.

I am not sure if it is against the forum rules to post prices, (and mod if it is, sorry), but you can get a Pro6 Shell for ~$800

    (I've actually seen the Pro6 for $749)

and 6 3TB drives for around $1000, giving you dual redundancy and ~12TB of storage for under $2k.
  • That is a great price, it's almost $200 less than the Newegg price.

Interesting. Perhaps they left the Ultra 6 Plus off that page by mistake.

The Ultra 6 Plus is a fast NAS. It's the second fastest desktop ReadyNAS behind the Pro 6. See CPU Specs of the ReadyNAS
  • Thanks guys, it just surprised me that it wasn't listed on Netgear's website and made me wonder if I'd missed something since I haven't been visiting the forum much lately.

mdgm, it was actually that posting you linked that made us decide on the + model over the regular.

It is a good model with a much faster CPU than the Ultra 6. The Pro 6 has a 5 year warranty (vs 3 year on Ultra/Ultra Plus), business features and an even faster CPU. If you haven't purchased yet I'd consider the Pro 6 too as it does everything the Ultra 6 Plus can plus more.
