Recomended HDDs for ReadyNAS Duo V2

Hi to everyone on the list,

I have ordered a bare-bones Duo V2 and I am now looking for a pair of cheap 3TB hdds to put in it in a RAID 1 array. Low power consumption, quiet operation and reliability are the cornerstone for me. I will use the Duo for my Mac backups and keep movies, music and pictures on it, so the drive performance is not all that important (as long as the HD content can stream to my TV smoothly over DLNA).

I was about to get either a pair of:

* Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001
or
* Western Digital Caviar Green WD30EZRX or WD30EZRS

but I saw posts mentioning issues with LCC (WD) or general SMART issues (Seagate) with those drives. Is that still the case? even with the latest Duo or drive firmware? Do you have experience running any of the above drives? If so, which one is better?

Also, for a premium I could get the Western Digital Red WD30EFRX. Is it worth it? Is the NAS support better in this case (I mean the lcc issues in particular).

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • The short answer is, is in most cases it does not matter just go with the cheapest.

    But you must accept that sooner or later you will have one or more disks that fail, and that no raid device is a substitute for backups.

    Backups mean, more than 1 copy of your data, on more than 1 different devices.
  • Personally I would go with the Red WD30EFRX. I've seen no issues posted here from users of the RED drives, I have seen ongoing issues on the others. Both Netgear and WD agree that the RED drives are suitable/supported for ReadyNAS use, which in my view is also a major benefit. The warranty is also better.
  • I won't hide that i'd like to avoid paying the premium for Red drives (which seem only to differ wrt to firmware) so I'd love to hear some opinions from guys running Caviar Green or Barracuda drives. Especially, whether the LCC/idle problem has been fixed or whether the hacks need to be used.
  • I have both the EZRS and the EZRX. Both generate LCCs at a pretty high rate in my Pro-6. AFAIK there is no fix apart from the hack. Whether that hack is a good idea is a matter of opinion.

    I don't have the ST3000DM001, though there are quite a few posts on those drives in the forum, including several recent ones. Of course folks without problems don't tend to post.

    BTW, there appears to at least one hardware difference in the red drives (the vibration reduction). Though I think the longer warranty is also one reason for the higher cost.

    Just installed a WD Red WD30EFRX in a Ultra 6 last night. First thing I noticed was that the disk runs a lot cooler than my SeaGates. If I didn't have other NAS units with higher priority to get high capacity disks I would be considering putting WD Red disks in my Duo v2 units.

    I've seen that also. I have a mix of WD and Seagate in my Pro-6, the red drive is the coolest.
