Replace a dead drive with a different model?

I have an Ultra 4+ with (3) 3TB WD Green drives with the WDIDLE fix applied (long, long ago, when there were no 3TB disks on the list and red didn't exist). One of those has now died and is in need of replacement. Do I need to replace it with another WD Green for compatibility, should I instead replace it with a WD30EFRX Red drive, or (as I've read these Red drives have cycle issues?) go with a Seagate ST3000VN000? I know I can mix drives in the NAS - the only real question I ask is because I figure I'll be in trouble if the new drive is a few blocks smaller than the old, and I I'm not overly confident that #TB to Seagate is equal to 3TB to WD.

Thanks!

  • Red drives do not have load cycle issues with the NAS. There was a brief period of time when they did, but WDC fixed that. They also provide a supported tool for Red drives if you want to change the settings.

I am running 10 WDC Reds in various NAS and do not have load cycle issues with any of them. I have mixed Reds and Greens with no problems in my Pro-6 in the past, though over time I retired the greens. I've never needed to adjust settings on the Reds.

There were some reports here on that some Seagate NV models are a couple of sectors smaller than standard - I am not sure which models though. However, I know that 3 TB reds play nicely with 3 TB greens.
