Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166
All,
I have a readynas Ultra 4 with (3) 2TB Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166 -302 drives in it. I have firmware CC3C that came with the drives. I have read the issues people have had with these drives. I have had my nas now for almost 1week and have no issues (fingers crossed) at all. I went to seagates website and found out my drives were manufactured 12-30-2011. I noticed drives that were problematic had a part number which ended in 301. Seagates website states I have the latest firmware for these drives (enter serial number of each drive). Can anyone shed any light on this since I am a bit apprehensive even though all seems to be working fine. Any new information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI found the site slow too. It took me multiple tries to download it but it eventually downloaded fully. The zip file is 6.2MB (6442824 Bytes) in size. I get a md5 hash of dbdc90a8c0685a1b4a62fb8b5898d5e2 though if you can unzip the downloaded file then it's downloaded successfully.
My disks are CC32 and I don't have a PC to use so I haven't done the update. - beisser1Tutorok we got news from seagate.
at this point it doesnt look good for any update for the cc32 drives. its just too old.
instead customers are advised to rma their cc32 drives with seagate and specifically request cc3c drives in return. you need to mention in the rma process that cc32 contains a bug that will make the disk hang and drop out of raid until reboot. if you dont do that you may get your old drive back because it passes seagates automated function-tests. - toto4AspirantBeisser,
Thanks again! Unfortunately I still cannot download the firmware update to CC3D. Every time I try it errors out. This really stinks! Seagate's site will not work for me. I'll keep trying. Thanks! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retiredtoto4 check your PM.
I think I ended up using wget on one of my ReadyNAS to download the file. After a few goes or so it worked. - toto4Aspirantmdgm,
I replied to your pm. Thanks so much! - opt2boutAspirantAre there any updates to this drive issue and the correct firmware? I have two CC32 drives and 4 CC3C drives. One of the CC3C drives just recently failed and I can't flash the CC32 drives using the bootable ISO. Earlier in this thread there was supposed to be some verification whether the CC32 drives could be flashed with CC3D or not or if they should be/returned only, etc.

look here: viewtopic.php?p=364047#p364047 - NermalAspirantI wish people good luck with getting an RMA.
I ended up here looking for a solution for my similar ST2000DL003-9VT166 drive issues. I do not have a ReadyNAS, but am using software RAID on a Linux (Ubuntu 11.10) box. Now I will admit that I have had the drives for a little over a year and have been able to keep things mostly stable by turning off all of the SMART tools.
I followed the advice above and asked for an RMA to replace my drives as the drives were being dropped out of a RAID setup and was unavailable to the OS until the system was rebooted. I made the mistake of mentioning that these are in a Linux machine. An option I presented was that instead of going through RMA process, maybe they could provide me with some specific kernel parameters that could be set to make it work better with these drives. Their response was they did not support Linux and these drives were only supported by Windows and OSX. When I asked about support for NAS equipment from Netgear, Iomega, and Drobo, they said to verify the HCL from that manufacturer and to contact that manufacturer.
Has anyone actually been able to get a RMA to swap out the drives that still passed their Seatools test suite?
I would not have been as upset with what I had been told if they had said the drives were out of warranty (even though I consider them a lemon in this case). Maybe I followed the wrong process by using the general Seagate Support link. Maybe I presented my case to them the wrong way. Who knows. - DavemanAspirantbeisser,
I was just about to back up my NAS and try to get an RMA for my three CC32 drives and after hearing Nermal’s story, I’m a bit concerned.beisser wrote: ok we got news from seagate.

Is it enough to just say what you stated in your previous post quoted above? Should we reference this thread? Is there a case number on file with Seagate that we can reference to convince them to accept the RMA?
Thanks,
Dave - beisser1Tutor

its the info we got from seagate. there will probably never be an update for the cc32 drives. seagate said affected customers should instead go for rma with seagate and specifically state that they need a replacementdrive with cc3c or newer since cc32 contains a bug that will make it drop in raid environments.
unfortunately i dont have any additional info from seagate at the moment.
sure you can try to reference this thread, but seagate should be able to verify this info internally so it should not be necessary.
