Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM working good so far
There was a recent deal at NewEgg on the SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM 32MB drives, so I decided to risk it as opposed to the other WD & Seagate 2tb drives. I installed them, upgraded the ReadyNAS firmware then did a factory reset. Disk 4 took most of an evening to resync, but finally finished. So far it's been running fine as I've been copying data off my old NV+ on to the new Ultra 4.
The Ultra 4 is sitting in the bottom of my gun safe, so low heat is rather important to me and I thought a 5400 would be a better bet. So far I haven't seen any Temp1 above 140f or so and the HD's are usually at or under 100f, never seen one above 108f. I was worrried that the enclosed fireproof safe would end up retaining too much heat, but it's been 3 days now with no problems. When I have the safe open the drives are very quiet, not surprisingly closed you can't hear a thing at all.
Will try and post later when I see how they hold up.

- ScoottieAspirantI am looking to upgrade my current drives (4 x 1TB) in my NV+, but I have been reading the problems that people have getting these to work with non Win 7 systems. As far as I see the process is to hook these drives up to a Win 7 system, flash the firmware, format and install into a ReadyNAS. Is this right?
My other issue is that I really dont have anywhere else to put my data while I upgrade to these drives. I run it in RAID5 mode so what i was thinking was to insert one drive at a time and let it resync and copy all the data over like that. Any suggestions? - shadowzAspirantHi,
I'm having same issue as marcelser, but with X-Raid. playing any video files from the NV unit with the samsung drives will lag, stutter, or just freeze. I have another unit that has the wdc10eacs drives which does not have such issues with the same file. I've went over the config and both units have identical performance options. I'm about to take them out and return it.
:( - marcelserAspirantHi,
Just bought 4 x 2TB HD204UI Drives for my ReadyNAS NV+. Patched the firmware on all 4 disks, installed them on the readynas and did a factory reset.
Then I choose FlexRaid (Not X-Raid) to make two Striped 4TB Volumes. One as my working volume, one as a backup and I use the TimeMachine to make a backup from Volume 1 to Volume 2 once a week.
But before upgrading to the Samsung Drives I had two Seagate 500GB Drives installed and Performance was ok. But with the new Samsung Drives it feels like their performance is very very bad. I already looked at the partition.log but the partition start numbers are divible by 8 and first partition starts at 32 so they are aligned to 4K sectors.
I already enabled all the possible options which improve performance in the "performance settings" in raidiator.
Does anybody have a good benchmark I can run from my workstation to see the performance and how do the others feel about the speed of the HD204UI???
I'm very disappointed at the moment as I read in this forum that the disks are working well (apart from the firmware issue). But to me they seem so slow.... :-(
Does anybody have tips for improvements because the old 500GB Drives were much faster...
Thanks for any hints and tricks. - Mutley1AspirantHi People
Anyone know what the LCC should be with these hard drives?
What's considered ok?
Currently got 26 disk 1 and 6 disk 2. - Mutley1AspirantHi OriginUnknown
Try this, it should give you the info required
Click on Home in Radiator
Click on Health tab on left
Click on Smart+ tabs to the right for each hdd
Will bring up the info on hdds
Hope that helps - OriginUnknownAspirantHi guys,
I've installed a pair of the spinpoint drives in my duo but i'm a bit lost as to how i go about checking the sector count??
I did notice that when i first installed the drives - did the firmware update it was only sync'n the drives at around 22mb/sec but after another factory reset and firmware update it was going around 44mb/s - dalewisAspirantI ordered two of these from newegg last week and have had them in my Duo for a few days now (after applying the firmware update). So far, so good. BitTorrent via Transmission and Time Machine backups have both been running continuously with no problems.
- mattseattleAspirant*laff* I understand.... well good luck with patching the other Samsung drive.
and Downloaded successfully sounds correct. I don't remember the exact wording but it was along those lines. - Mutley1AspirantHi mattseattle
Every Man has to have enough respect to be worried about his Mum. Who else is gonna lend you £500 when you need it?
In regards to themattseattle wrote: Did you shut down your Duo before you pulled out the hard drive? It shouldn't be resynching. I shut down my Pro and did all the drives and put them back in. After that I booted it back up and no resynch and no loss of date.
Yeah, powered down, done the right thing. But it was disk 2 of the Duo. Whether that makes a difference or not I'm not sure. I've just had some trouble with the disks. Basically I removed disk 1 to Patch first of all. Forgot that disk 2 is only a parity disk, and so in desperation trying to achieve the samsung patch, I formatted the disk 1 to NTFS to see if it'd work. Thinking I'd just replace it back into the Duo and it's re-sync etc..
It didn't......the Duo just reported missing paths to shares, as they were not showing on disk 1. As you can imagine, my brains' kicked in and realised what mdgm had told me the other week about disk 2 only being mirrored/parity. Balls!
mdgm sorted me out and instructed me to do this and that and disk 1 has now re-synced. And just patched disk 2 last night and that's re-synced. But maybe this time if I'd used disk 1 to patch first, there may have been no reason for either disk to re-sync. I guess I'll find out when I patch disk 1 later tonight or tomorrow. If it gets patched and goes back in and doesn't go through a 12 hour re-sync and retains data, then I'm pretty sure If I'd done disk 1 first (as it's the primal disk with mbr) , then disk 2 might not have had to go through the 12 hour re-sync.
I could be wrong, just a theory as to why it had to re-sync.
I'm just off back to where I bought the pc from. I've actually made and effort with my apprearenc. First time in weeks. A girl in the shop was flirting with me last night. It's been a long while since that's happened, been somewhere in limbo since my divorce etc...So this girl is flirting with me, god knows why as I think I look like a bag of s***. But not being used to it anymore, I felt like a rabbit caught in the head lights!
Anyway going back to the shop because the poxy pc or monitor I've just bought, doesn't have speakers! Is that normal these days? It was a mini tower, so that might be the reason, but the monitor? A new latest greatest LED monitor, and no speakers?
I should've paid £70 more for a bigger tower that might've had speakers inside. Also there's not room for nothing in this mini tower. But do I really want it to do anymore expansion wise? Haven't really got time these days. So I minged it and thought It would just get the job done of patching. Which it did.
Now I've broke the seal on the back of the unit, I doubt they'd exchange anyway. And I don't think I need the stress of hoping they don't check the seal on the back and then that look they'll give 'You've been in the pc you Sucker, no warranty now, how stupid do you think we are'. That look. I don't think I need the shame these days.
BTW the clarification I got on screen said 'Downloaded succesfully'. Not 'Upgrade successfully'. I'm assuming it's the same. Can anyone confirm?
Got to hide the new monitor, She's coming around on Saturday. The mini tower she might miss, but the monitor is too obvious. She's just lent me £500 as I had a cash flow problem, not going to work and all trying to patch these silly hdd's. If she sees the new pc, she'll think automatically I've used it for that (credit card for pc, did have a cash flow problem).
Now do you see why she'll kill me.?
Man or no Man, Sucker or Suckee?
I can't decide...Old Spice, Hi-Karate or Kouros - mattseattleAspirantI'm glad you got one of the drives done. I wouldn't worry about the cable flex - just hold the drive in your hand if you need to. It only has to be connected long enough to run the Samsung patch file.
