ST2000DL003 good for Ultra 2 + ?

Hi all

New to ReadyNAS - just got a Ultra 2 + for media streaming.

The idea is to have Plex Server on the NAS and a Plex client on my mac mini - so its mainly going to be used for streaming movies.

Question:
Is Barracuda LP ST2000DL003 2TB a good disk for this NAS? It is cheap and seems ok from reviews. What is your experience (especially regarding media streaming)?

  • Thx for the quick reply. I found them on the HCL, but I was hoping for more hands-on experince.

Like is people had issues with them, are they to slow for movie streaming, noisy etc?
  • Since you are going to be using a Mac Mini, if it were me, I would stay away from them. That said, I have a lot of Seagate drives and have had good performance from them, but, there have been a number of intermittent failures with that drive, most often when the network has Macs. Here is the discussion on the gremlins: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=51496.

I do not have any WD drives in service in any of my NAS units, but have used them on PC's with relatively good results.

You can consider the Hitachi HDS723020BLA642 which is currently $227 (with shipping) on Newegg. Prices are high at this point. The Samsung HD204UI is also on the approved list for the Ultra 2+ and is $167 (with shipping) from Newegg. You may want to consider going to a 3TB drive instead. The Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 is on the list. I have had 4 of them in service for about 8 months with no problems (2 each in 2 NVX units). Hitachi has strange packaging that make take some explaining. The model number is on the label, but they use an opaque anti-static bag and only the part no. (P/N) appears on the bag and box. There are three different packaging of the HDS5C3030ALA630 as follows:
P/N 0S03230 bare drive (which I have) is currently $237 from Newegg (again with shipping), the 0S03228 retail boxed version is $218 (w/shipping) from Newegg and the 0F12460 also a bare drive is currently $247 from Newegg. When looking at the drives and the images of the label on the drive, you can see the labels are different but all have the model number of HDS5C3030ALA630.

The reason I suggested the 3TB is from my experience when building a volume with videos, they eat drive space at an alarming rate. A 1 hour DVD quality video takes 2GB and more, and 1 hour of mp4 takes 1GB. I started with a volume of 2.7TB on my NVX (4x1TB Seagates) and rapidly ate up the space. I then replace 2 of the 1TB drives with 2 of the 3TB Hitachis mentioned above for a total volume of 4.5TB and am currently at 48% of my space. I am hoping that the drive prices begin to fall soon so I can add another 3TB to each of my units. Of course if you have not already purchased the Ultra 2+ and plan to do a lot of video, you may want to consider the Ultra 4+.

The flooding in Thailand has really disrupted the drive market.
  • Thx a million for the reply

I was thinking of a 3 tb drive and you have convinced me. To bad Newegg doesn't ship to Denmark :-(

Any idea of timespan before prices come down abit?
  • I have no idea when prices will come down to normal. I had personally thought it would be before now, and in fact they have a bit. Immediately after the flood, most drives doubled in price but have now come down some.

I did not realize you were in Denmark as you did not put that in your profile. I know that Amazon here carries those drives, but they don't have nearly the images that Newegg does. There are times I find the exact item on Newegg, and then compare with Amazon. I believe that Amazon has European operations.
