Switch advice please
Hello,
Having verified that my Virgin Media 'Super Hub' is not the best as a switch, I was thinking of getting a decent one which I may use for some years when/if my network expands. I like the idea of a managed switch, but which one? Also, I can find some models on the web which are not on Netgear's website anymore - discontinued? Like the GS108T-200UKS.
Anyway, any suggestions for a, say, decent 8-12 ports switch?
Thanks!

Port trunking is not available on the GS108E, but the GS116Ev2 (part number GS116E-200xxx) does support it. Right, that's the GS116E version 1 (part number GS116E-100xxx). The GS116Ev2 (part number GS116E-200xxx) has more features: http://www.netgear.de/images/Gigabit_PlusSwitches_DS_15Apr1422-79998.pdf - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
The GS724T datasheet specifically calls out 802.3ad. I don't see either 802.3ad or 802.1ax in your newer datasheet either.tony359 wrote: Well the smart switches' datasheet mentions port trunking. There must be something but I can't find an exact reference.
802.3ad is supported by all the smart switches, does that say anything?
Port trunking implies link aggregation, but it doesn't necessarily mean LACP - it could be proprietary. - fastfwdVirtuoso

Yes. As I said, I don't use port trunking, so I can't say for sure. I do remember reading somewhere that it was 802.3ad... But I can't find that web page now, so I can't confirm it. - xeltrosApprenticeisn't trunking 802.1Q ?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced User802.1Q is vlan, not link aggregation.
- xeltrosApprenticeAlright just read trunk could be used for link aggregation on english version of wikipedia, french version was less complete (as often for technology).
"A trunk port can refer a port that sends and receives tagged frames on all VLANs, except the native VLAN, if one is configured. The term trunk may also be used to refer to a connection using link aggregation." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.1Q
I only used trunk port as the opposite of the access port in Cisco devices (switchport mode (access/trunk)). So to me a trunk port was something that helped in Vlan implementation with multiple switches and had nothing to do with link aggregation which is why I didn't see the link between 802.3AD and Trunking. - tony359ApprenticeI've asked netgear
It seems that what you are referring to is Link Aggregation or LAG. I agree that the ReadyNAS Pro 6 supports LAG wherein you could combine the 2 Ethernet ports of it into one but the GS108E does not support it. - tony359ApprenticeI've got the switch, testing now.
I can't have the setup software to run on my PC. Ok, this is OT and I have posted on netgear forum, but maybe someone here had the same experience? I can click on it, the software is running on my task manager and windows asks for firewall permissions, but nothing shows up.
Tried and tried, no luck. Adobe Air and the other little sw needed by the utility are installed. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI'm not sure which switch you got. But the Netgear smart switches can also be configured using http, so maybe try that. You should be able to see the switch IP address in your router.
- tony359ApprenticeOh sorry I forgot to mention. I ended up with the GS108E which I understand can only be configured by its utility, I don't think the switch has an IP but I may be mistaken.
