Ultra 2 Temp 1 sensor

I just purchased an Ultra 2 diskless NAS and have installed two Seagate ST2000DL003 2TB drives.
I am concerned about the temperature readings I'm getting on Temp 1. I have the Ultra 2 set to spin down the
drives after 15 minutes of inactivity and these are the temp readings I see this morning after
turning the system back on.

Temp 1 = 168 degrees F
Temp 2 = 82.4 degrees F
Fan speed = 598 rpm
Firmware 4.2.17

I have completed the initial setup steps but have not started actively using the Ultra 2 yet until I determine if this is a problem that requires replacement.
I currently have the Ultra 2 completely powered off. Since there are several other posts reporting the same issue in Ultra 2's using a variety of HDD's would
it be safe to assume there may be a problem with the Temp 1 sensors? Any update is appreciated. Thank you.

  • He is already using 4.2.17. Using an older beta firmware will not help.

Steve, can you submit your system logs (link in my sig)?
  • I have to hook on on this topic, having heat issues with my Ultra 2 (2x2TB).

On consecutive nights it emailed warnings temperature about 80C threshold exceeded.
This morning the unit was not accessible and the Fan was running on full speed until unit was powered down.
  • I'm curious what the outcome was for the original poster. My ultra 2+ runs just as hot. I was initially concerned when I purchased the unit because compiles would cause it to send overheat messages. Then after I got it setup, it was one of those out of sight, out of mind issues.

It's currently idling at 761rpm with temp 1: 168F, temp 2: 95F. It's in an open air setting with ambient 78F. When the temp creeps closer to 170F, the fan eventually kicks up to ~1200 or ~1500 until the temps are down to 159F/91F. Then the fan drops back to ~760 rpms and the temp goes back up.

Tonight my phone starts blipping with overheating emails while I was recompiling some apps.

If relevant, because I see it mentioned in another thread, I also have "Unable to read TjMax from CPU" in my logs.
  • I have the same problem, where on not too hot days, the temp sensor indicates very high temps. Ultra 2. Are these units defective?
