Ultra 4 dead disk & re-striping time
Seagate 2TB Disk 4 reported 'dead' and I am getting ready to replace hard drive. However, it has been re-striping for 4-5 days. Front panel says 0.0% complete but web interface says 38% complete, so I'm not sure if re-striping is occuring. Using web interface I'm unable to shut-down Ultra 4 because it says background task is running. I removed disk 4 while powered on and web interface still thinks Disk 4 is attached. I attempted to export logs on a Mac and now the Ultra 4 is unreachable. Now I'm concerned about what is going to happen if I power down or insert new disk. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

- PapaBear1ApprenticeIt should take 5-8 HOURS to resync, not days. Did you remove the disk in bay 4 while the unit was resynching?
What is the status of your backup? Do you have a current and complete one? - tkellyAspirantYes I removed dead disk while re-striping was occurring. I figured with front panel displaying 0.0% complete for last 4-5 days it was not doing anything. I have current backup that should be good on external USB drive. I was able to access my data OK after disk 4 went dead. But once I tried to export log files the unit hung and has since been unable to access. if it really was re-stripping curious if I power off unit what will happen . I could go to backup if I need but I also have 'Time Machine' partition that I don't have backed up but if I loose that I can recover.
- tkellyAspirantI'm starting to get concerned as I read more post of users getting dead disk errors after upgrading to 4.2.22 which I did also. Failure came a few days afterward.
- vandermerweMasterI'm sure, just by coincidence, that some users will experience disk failures that are temporally related to firmware upgrades. There is then forum publication bias - users who experience problems will post, those without problems (the vast majority), will not post.
I suspect these failures are not attributable to the upgrade itself. - tkellyAspirantI'm one not to jump on the bandwagon but this has not been going well for me so far and it probably is a coincidence. I'll also admit I know very little about the Ultra 4 and it's file structure. It has been working GREAT for last 2 years. I'm pretty sure 4-5 days of re-striping might be too long? Since unit has been unreachable after trying to export log file, I have manually powered off and inserted new hard drive in bay #4. How long should I expect to see 'Booting... Testing Disk 4' on front panel for a 2TB HD? Thanks.
- vandermerweMasterI'm not suggesting you don't have a disk problem - you do; just that its probably not related to 4.2.22.
The unit is probably not going to come online again until you get a new disk in, but given the unusual behaviour and the fact that you can't shut it down formally, you may face a greater risk of data loss.
You could be really careful and contact support, or you could force a shut down, insert a new disk into 4, and try to boot.
There is a risk to data as you will be left with only one copy if this fails and the NAS starts to build a new volume,
Edit: sorry just seen you post. Testing does not take that long, the unit should be complete with testing and resync within 12 hours for a 2 tb - tkellyAspirantOk, I'll wait the 12 hrs or more. Sometime tomorrow I'll see if it has finished 'Booting.... Testing Disk 4' and has resync'd. Thanks for your suggestions.
- vandermerweMasterDid you test the disk using vendor tools when you bought it?
- tkellyAspirantI connected it to Mac as external USB and used Mac Disk Utility to partition and format and 'verified. But I didn't run a 'disk test' utility beyond that. I guess assuming a new disk is OK isn't a good practice? It's a Seagate listed on the compatibility list. I'll kill the Ultra 4 boot and disk testing thats running now, remove disk and find a utility from Seagate to download. Thxs.
- tkellyAspirantWhat should happen if I just remove disk 4 and boot without inserting a new disk into bay 4? Should it boot up OK and will it restripe on 3 disk instead of 4 disks?
