Ultra 4 Plus with single 3 TB drive?

Hello everyone. This is a great forum. I have learned a lot already butI have so much more to learn.

I am considering to purchase a ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Plus starting out with just a single 3 TB drive. I plan to add two or three drives within the next six months or so, as my budget permits. My ultimate goal is to fill all bays within the next year. However I have a couple of questions.

1. Do the Ultra 4 Pluses that are currently shipping have the appropriate firmware that supports 3 TB drives already installed? Or will I have to update the firmware right out of the box? As I understand, at least one hard drive has to be installed before the firmware can be updated. I don't have a spare drive so updating the firmware out of the box could be a problem for me.

2. I plan to start out with only one 3 TB drive and add one or two more in a coupe of months. Is there any technical reason why I can't start out with a single hard drive?

By the way, I plan to use the NAS in my home to stream hi-def video and music, network storage for multiple pc's, additional storage for my Tivo unit, remote access, iTunes (iPhone and iPad). Having a 4 x 3TB NAS might seem to be a little overkill but I want to future proof the NAS as much as possible. A Ultra 6 Plus is out of my budget range.

Thanks,
Jeff

    1. I'm not sure. It's likely if running older firmware, the 3TB drive will still be recognised just <1TB of it. You could update to the latest firmware, verify update completed successfully and then do a factory reset (System > Update > Factory Default) to get a clean setup on the latest firmware.

    2. That's fine.

The Ultra 6 uses the same CPU as the Ultra 4 Plus. The Ultra 6 Plus has a much faster CPU.

    Welcome to the forum!
  • Thanks mdgm for the quick reply. It didn't occur to me to install the 3 TB drive, perform the firmware update, and then do a factory reset.
