Unprotected/Not-Redundant but all drives green/OK #23600013
I have a ReadyNAS NV+ v2 with four WD 4TB RED (WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N0 3726 G) drives. I've been having a few problems with this unit and these drives that exhibit really peculiar behavior. Eventually, I had to exchange one of the drives and I finally go everything working for a few weeks. I can't figure out the current problem. Out of nowhere, the LCD display on the front of the ReadyNAS says, "C: unprotected". I checked Frontview and the volume size is the expected 10.8 TB, but it says "Not-Redundant" and all four drives have a green dot status and "OK" so I don't know which disk to remove/wipe/re-insert. I tried a few reboots/resyncs, but nothing changed, except this one time where Disk 4 came up dead. I re-inserted that one and then the LCD screen displayed "C: Lifesupp" and scared the crap outta me. I powered-down and restarted it, and after a long time, it finally booted back up and I'm at exactly the same place as before -- "C: unprotected". In Frontview, I did notice that Disk 4's SMART status says, "Raw Read Error Rate: 4423". So, is disk 4 the culprit? Should I hot-remove it? How else can I find out which drive is not part of the volume? I looked through the logs, but don't understand the system enough to know where to look and what to look for.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou should open a support case at my.netgear.com and attach your logs zip file and post your case number here.
It does sound like there is an issue with Disk 4. It is possible that other disks may have issues too. - ken830AspirantThanks. Just did that. Case #23600013.
- ken830AspirantThe reply from Support was not helpful. The Netgear rep just asked me to attach the logs, but I already did that last night when I opened the case.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt is a different issue to what I thought.
There is a different disk missing from md1 (swap) to the rest of the arrays.
Sounds like disk 4 is probably the only problem disk. - ken830AspirantThanks mdgm. Hmm.. What is the procedure to get Disk 4 re-added to the array? It was definitely part of the array at one time, as I had upgraded all the drives one-by-one, and disk 4 was not the last one. Or is the drive bad? I've already had one DoA WD RED drive which was causing the entire NAS to hang-up at 28% re-sync over-and-over again. It was replaced, and everything was good for a few weeks until this happened.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retiredmd1 is the swap, so having the dead disk sdd in that array hopefully shouldn't be a big issue.
Support has seen this issue before, so they should know what to do. - ken830AspirantSupport checked the logs and concludes that:
"The md0 (OS Partition), md2, and md3(data)do not include disk 4 and md1 (SWAP), does not include disk 2. "
But they want $150 before escalating to level 3 support. I don't think I would go that route especially since the ReadyNAS itself got itself into this weird state. Why should I need to pay someone to fix it? Is there anything I can read and learn to attack this issue myself? I just finished backing-up everything so I can tolerate some risk, and have the option to completely reset everything and start over. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSeeing you have a backup, I would go the route of a backup, factory reset (wipes all data, settings, everything) then restore your data from backup.
The issue could be fixed with some commands using mdadm most likely, removing disk 4 from SWAP and adding disk 2.
For complex issues paid support can be required.
