Using UPS with ReadyNas 102
Hello
I need to install a UPS on a ReadyNas 102. The power supply to the office is not that great and whilst the NAS is currently on a surge protected supply there is no UPS in place.
Would this device from APC be suitable please? http://www.apc.com/shop/gb/en/products/APC-Back-UPS-700VA-230V-AVR-IEC-Sockets/P-BX700UI?_requestid=9103
I read this guide before posting http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22814/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDU0NDI0MzI5L3NpZC9sbmozMjRJbQ%3D%3D which seems to suggest that the NAS will gracefully shut down anyway if it detects low power on the battery of the UPS. Is that the case with the ReadyNas 102?
I understand that the APC unit has a USB connection and does come with Parachute software but presumably thats just for installation on a computer. I just need to understand how the 102 will be shut down safely in the event of a power cut and is there a away it can be automatically restarted once power is resumed?
If that APC device is no good can someone recommend one that is suitable please?
Thanks

Protecting your NAS with a UPS is a very good idea, and I always recommend it. A lot of problems here start with an unexpected power loss.

It looks suitable to me. APC is a popular choice here, and there aren't many issues reported. I happen to use CyberPower myself, but that is mostly habit - not because of any issues with APC.

Yes. You just need to connect the UPS to the NAS over the USB port. No need to install any special software on the NAS.

The NAS shuts down when the UPS sends a critical power alert to the NAS. Once that happens, you need to manually restart the NAS. You can probably do that remotely if you have WoL enabled.
Since it won't automatically restart, you should try a get a UPS with a good enough battery to carry you through most power failures. If this is a major issue for you, then maybe get a UPS with a higher VA. Though the RN102 is quite good on power use - smallnetbuilder.com measured 16 watts with 2 WD30EFRX drives installed (and spinning).

Many thanks for that really useful reply. I have however now been advised from my supplier that the APC unit I linked to does not come with the powerchute software which I think might be incorrect as in the link it states "Use your PC to access additional power protection and management features for your UPS via a USB Port." Which kind if suggests it can be controlled via the USB port. Its so confusing. I Cannot seem to get sensible answers from either our suppliers or APC.
I have however had it confirmed that this device from Tripp Lite does come with USB support and free software for auto shut down. I know now that its not necessary or even possible to load the software on the NAS but it clearly does have to have a USB connection to the NAS or will it just detect low voltage? I would like to get the same models for the desktops as well and they will need shut down software. Sorry about this but do you think the one below will be suitable? I think its slightly more powerful.

The NAS uses NUT (Network UPS Tools). Most APC UPS units work well with that.
