WD Green HD Replacement

I have a ReadyNAS pro with 4x WD Green 1.5 (WD15EAS) disks running XRAID2. One of the disks has failed and is out of warranty. These particular disks are not being made anymore. The closest thing I can find is:

Western Digital WD Green WD20EZRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
Western Digital Red WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Both disks have more cache (64MB) and are 2TB (not 1.5TB). The "Red" series wasn't available when I built this NAS which seems to be disks "optimized for NAS" (whatever that means). Do you think I should replace the single failed disk with the GREEN or RED drive above?

Will I have any problems running different disks together? They both are "intellipower" variable-RPM models just like the Green disks that I already have in the array.

    Get the 2TB Red. The Red is a much better choice than Green drives for NAS use.

    If you want to use a disk with capacity greater than 2TB make sure that the firmware has been updated to 4.2.16 or later before installing the disk.
  • Thanks for the reply. If I eventually replace each 1.5TB green disk with red 2TB disks, I can grow my RAID volume, correct?

    If two were replaced with 2TB disks your volume would expand assuming you are using single-redundancy. You would need four 2TB disks for vertical expansion if using dual-redundancy.
