WD Red SATA 6Gb/s 64MB 3.5" Hard Drives

Hi all,

I have ReadyNAS NV+ configured X-RAID with 4 x Seagate 1 TB Barracuda's ES.2. RAIDiator 4.1.13. Device has been running 24/7 for many years without fault, until now. More recently SMART errors began to occur daily on Disk 1 which I eventually replaced only to find Disk 3 too began to throw up SMART errors a few months later. I'm thinking these drives having done many years of service probably now need replacing with new units.

I'm thinking of replacing my failing drives with 4 new WD 1TB Red SATA 6Gb/s 64MB 3.5". Unfortunately the WD compatibility list does not include the ReadyNAS NV+ presumably as its an old device now. Does anyone know if fitting the above drives to be an issue? I'm down to 3 working drives again so another failure and I'm doomed.

Any feedback gratefully received.

ATB - Simon

I am using a 2 TB WDC WD20EFRX drive in my Duo V1, and it is working flawlessly. The WD RED WD10EFRX is on Netgear's HCL for the NV+ v1.

I'd price 2 TB drives also. They are only about $30 more per drive in the US at the moment. 3x2TB would give you 1 more TB of space (compared with 4x1TB), and only cost you $33 more. And you'd get an open slot for expansion.
  • Thanks Stephen, Pricing here in UK comparative. Works out 2TB is only £23 more than 1TB. So now I know what I'm doing I had best get my order in.

    Thanks again for your help.

If you go 3x2TB you will need to do a factory reset (and rebuild your data from backup). The reset is probably needed anyway to get 4K sector alignment.
  • All done and working perfectly. Noticeable difference both in data transfer speed (better), and enclosure running cooler with WD Reds fitted. Very impressed. Albeit forced disk upgrade due to failing and old disks, well worth it regardless. Wish I had done sooner.

    Thank you again.
