WD30EZRX Any problems ?

Its not on the official compatibility list ofc, but im hoping thats just a matter of time.
Tho a confirmation from someone thats actually tried one would be much appreciated.
This is for an Ultra4 plus with fresh firmware btw.
I'd get the officially approved if possible ofc, but manufacturers change versions faster then they get tested it seems.

/Regards

What is different about these drives is that the first certification was done not by Netgear but by Western Digital in several ReadyNAS units as well as competing products. To my knowledge, these are the first consumer grade drives designed specifically for multi disk RAID arrays. Although WD initially certified the drives in the ReadyNAS Duo, Ultra 2 Plus, Ultra 4 and Pro 6, Netgear has certified the drive in a much wider range of ReadyNAS units including the Duo V2 but not the Duo (v1).
I agree these are the first consumer drives aimed at home RAID arrays. If this Red line sticks, then it will likely be very popular with home NAS owners - a safe choice that works in all popular NAS products, is affordable and has reasonable performance.

WDC and Seagate are taking different strategies here. WDC is increasing the differentiation further (now has 4 distinct drive types), Seagate is planning to abandon their "green" drives (consolidating their lines). It will be interesting to see how the two different approaches play out.

Though my guess would be that WDC asked Netgear and the competing manufacturers to do the actual certification, and that WDC didn't do it themselves.
  • They very well could have. I think they have already hit a market point. I became aware of them on Friday and Newegg had them in stock. Yesterday evening when I looked them up again they were sold out of the 3TB versions.
  • Ok, i have been using the RNDU4000 with WD30EZRX for a month now. during this month is was working full time: downloading, repairing, moving, copying. Plus i needed to copy my old 2x2TB nas to the netgear.

    I just checked SMART+ and i see:

    Spin Up time :8k
    Load Cycle Count : 11

Do i need to worry about the Spin Up Time?

No. It is the time to spin up in milliseconds - 8 seconds to fully spin up sounds normal to me. (Mine takes 9, and seems to be fine).
  • Has anyone tried the NV+ V2 with 5.3.5 firmware with the wdidle3.exe /d Mod on the WD30EZRX Drives?

Did it fix the NAS crash on Large File copies?

Does anyone think that the wdidle3 trick would help at all?

    Cheers!

I haven't tried it, but if I understand what it does correctly, I don't think it will help you. It increases a threshold, so that the drives take longer to park after disk activity ends.

However, when you are doing a large file transfer the drives are always active, so the heads should never be parking anyway.
  • Ahh Gotcha, it seems that the drives park fine in the NV+ V2 after IDE and Spin up with no issues
  • anyone knows why these disks are not on the HCL for the Ultra6? is it because the enduser needs to do a wdidle to fix?
i now have 4x3TB (Green) and 1x3TB (Red) in the Ultra6. And i'm thinking about changing these 4x3TB from Green to Red. Smart results looks still perfect after about 6 months. Hardly worth it changing these drives?

I also wonder why the Duo V2 supports these drives. Can the Duo V2 overrule the firmware idle setting?

Look at the load cycle count. If you haven't hacked the drive settings with widdle, then it should be going up pretty quickly.

If you have already run widdle, then the counts will not be increasing. WDC could deny you warranty coverage later on if they detect what you've done, though I haven't heard of any cases where they actually have.

If you haven't run widdle, then there is still no need to rush to replace them. Though if you want to get a new 3 TB drive for a PC, you might consider getting a Red instead, and swapping out one of the green drives. Or just leave them alone until you see signs of failure.
  • i have used wdidle and the LCC looks very good. so it worked.

But what i don't understand is why the Duo V2 can handle the WD green without using wdidle.. and the ultra6 cannot
