Will this work for me?
HI All,
I am going to purchase the R/N 214 with 4 bays. I am looking on the HCL and they show a Desktar Drive by Hitachi. The only Deskstar drives I find are made by WD. Here's a link to what I found:
I have 4 bays but I only need about 2 TB of data. Of course that will probably change over time. So I was thinking I would put in Quantity 3 of the Desktar 3 TB drives. The Raid Calculator says I'll have 6TB of data.
My questions - will this WD Deskstar be compatible?
And is this a good configuration? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I just want to do this right the first time!

HGST used to be Hitachi, but later got sold off to Western Digital. The drives should work, and most reports on deskstar drives here have been positive. Other good choices are WDC Red and WDC Red Pro.
Starting three drives is certainly viable, but it would be more economical to go with 2x4TB drives. Not only is the initial outlay less, you have more room for expansion later.

Personally speaking the WD reds are great drives. Any manufacture that lists NAS storage as its primary role is a good choice. From there it comes down to price and performance - comfort more or less. Your choice. I have had great success using WD Reds 2 TB and recently over the past few months upgraded to the WD 6 TB reds.
