iSCSI Issues ReadyNAS duo
Hi guys,
I have iSCSI issues and I am hoping someone can help - basically I am having the same problem as AlanP - last post in this thread. (I have posted here because it seemed more approriate)
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&p=273111#p273111
I am running latest "iscsi target" (paypal button present no config options) - firmware on nas 4.1.7-T49 (yes I know new one is out but dont see this as the prob)
I have created a 40 gb isci file - stopped and started services on NAS. Added IP of NAS to initiator in Windows 7 (stopped and started) service, refreshed targets but the 40 gig LUN is never seen as a target. Just like Alan I'm not sure what else to try as all looks good on the NAS and no matter what I do the initiator will not see the LUN. I am used to working with a Netapp and never had this problem :(
All help and suggestions appreciated.

- WhoCares_MentorSince you've created the 40GB iSCSI file it is safe to assume you have SSH access. So if you could post some log info that might be really helpful to see what problem is there and how to eventually fix it. Without any hard info it's more or less "fishing in the dark". I'd be especially interested in iscsi related messages in /var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages - if any.
-Stefan - WhoCares_MentorOk, I just tested with my Windows 7 box against my Duo. I found a problem that may be causing your issues: After installing an add-on FrontView tries to start up that add-on immediately. When there's no iSCSI file available this will leave a stray iSCSI daemon process running which doesn't let itself get killed using the normal start/stop scripts. If that's the case, this running daemon instance effectively blocks any subsequent run of the iSCSI target software.
The solution is to either use "ps ax" to look for and manually kill the stray ietd process or to shutdown and restart the ReadyNAS. Afterwards everything should be working as expected. At least my Win7 box connects fine to the iSCSI target I created on my ReadyNAS Duo.
-Stefan - nicknotesAspirantI am running latest "iscsi target" on a ReadyNAS Duo.
The homepag shows the firmware rev as RAIDiator 4.1.7 [1.00a043]
Looking at the installed add-on's I see the iSCSI add-on green light and paypal button present - there are no config options
Is this unusual for me not to be able to see the current location of the iSCSI target? - WhoCares_MentorThe iSCSI add-on installs just the software and kernel modules needed to run an iSCSI target on the ReadyNAS. All the oth things like creating the base file for the target as well as the configuration stuff has to be done on the command line from an SSH shell.
-Stefan - nicknotesAspirantHi Stefan,
I understand that the iSCSI has to be configured through SSH Shell and have done so to the best of my ability. However other posts indicate that once successful, the target that has been defined should show up in the ReadyNAS configuration screen under the Add-Ins area. I see the iSCSI add-on section and the green light indicating it has been configured and is running, but only see a PayPal button and no mention of the target c/iscsi_0
Is this usual?
-Rob - WhoCares_MentorI don't know where you got that information from but the add-on I made for sure will not show the targets in the add-on section. To test that you target was accepted by the iSCSI daemon and that it is actually up and accessible, you can do a 'ps ax' on the SSH command line. You should see a number of [ioscd1] tasks running there.
-Stefan - nicknotesAspirantThanks Stefan.
FYI I saw the screen shot on the following page "http://www.markwilson.co.uk/blog/2009/09/creating-an-iscsi-target-on-a-netgear-readynas.htm"
It showed a shot from the ReadyNAS config screen. Perhaps it was taken from a Netgear unit that natively supports iSCSI?? - WhoCares_MentorAh, ok, now I see what you mean. The screenshot you are referring to was actually taken on a Windows client. There the target will of course show up once it has been configured properly on the ReadyNAS.
-Stefan - nicknotesAspirantThis isn't my experience. Having followed all of the instructions and successfully got a iSCSI drive configured and operating, if I do a 'ps ax' on the SSH command line I see a single [istd] task and a number of [istiod1] tasks. The Windows client interface still shows the paypal information but no config button or notification of the configuration.
Perhaps this is a change between the old and new installations as I am using RAIDiator 4.1.7 [1.00a043]?
Can I suggest a little more detail in regards to using 'vi' to edit the ietd.conf file would be very helpful for us newbies to Linux :)
Other than that, thank you for the add-on and I will certainly be forwarding some funds via PayPal. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe add-on instructions are here: http://readynasfreeware.org/projects/nas-iscsi-target/wiki/New_Version
If you just want one target called iscsi_0, then there's no need to edit the /etc/ietd.conf file at all. Just use the sample one.
If you need a more complex setup you'll need to use vi. To learn how to use 'vi' you can look at its MAN page and/or at tutorials on the internet.
