Ok. Since you have dsl, I think you are running PPPoE on your ISP connection. That usually lowers to MTU to 1480, which is what you are seeing.
You can try to limit the 312's MTU to 1480. That won't hurt performance on your local lan (at least not enough to matter), but could reduce fragmentation over the internet.
