- UK source for PSU ?

I got a call from my wife because downstairs there was a smell of burning.

Sniffing around I found it came from my ReadyNas NV+ 000D A201 3539 (purchased 1 may 2007)
It's so hot under the PSU that I suspect it actually burned, rather than failing safe.
No, I can't remember when I purchased it, my filing system isn't that good :(
Almost certainly it's out of warranty.

Even worse, the lights are out on my backup NV+ 000D A201 AC60 too (purchased 20 dec 2007)
That one died silently and odourlessly, but stubbornly refuses to power on.
I guess that one is dead too. It was automatically making copies of the photos each night.
It didn't send any backup error messages because it was dead - I think instead of a pull from 3539 I should have had 3539 push to AC60.

And the backup of that backup NV+ 000D A201 ABBF has also died (purchased 20 dec 2007).
Probably with a PSU failure, again failing to power on, but also smokeless.
That dies a few months ago, but I didn't worry about it as I had another backup - doh!

I'd backed up most of the main data to 3TB disk anyway, so I'm covered for most of it - but my latest 5000 or so images aren't backed up :(
But they are on the MacBook Pro, so as long as that doesn't die I'm OK.

I miss my NAS :~(

  • The first one, you can call support, get PSU RMA, even if out of warranty. That serial number is in range of known possible faulty PSUs. They may do something with the other two as well.
  • RMA sorted, thanks.
For the others, I reported them - but have already ordered a spare PSU from Amazon.
That should arrive Monday or Tuesday - then I can test each of the 3 units in turn.

I am a professional procrastinator. I should have done something months ago when the backup of the backup died ;)
Or even last month when the backup died, which is when I copied the main unit to a 3T HD.
    ah well.
Time to upgrade all the discs to get maximum storage possible, to keep me going for a few more years.
Then upgrade to newer, faster, units when I get my next bonus :)

    Thanks Chirpa.
  • OK so the result is that the two units purchased 20 Dec 2007 are just in warranty (by 5 days) they have been given RMA and new case numbers for the return.

    Case: 20062940
But the one that actually turned into smoke emitting device - that one is not under warranty.
Despite as you said "The first one, you can call support, get PSU RMA, even if out of warranty. That serial number is in range of known possible faulty PSUs."
Their reply is: "The PSU of this ReadyNAS NV+ is inside the unit itself. If there is a burning smell, we should replace the whole unit. However, as I checked your record for this NAS with Serial Number 000dA2013539, it appears that the hardware and support warranty are both expired.

You have an option of purchasing any of the contracts below that will give you extended hardware and support warranty:"

And they have no ability in the support centre to do anything other than sell me a support contract.
Since it's out of warranty by 7 months, I can understand their position.
  • Ask for the PSU RMA for the smokey one. Just swap the PSU, the other components are likely fine.

Even though out of warranty, the serial number is in range for RMA even when out of warranty.
If they can't comprehend that, ask them to get their supervisor, its all noted here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10259
  • yeah contact support again. they HAVE to replace the psu if the serial number is within the range given in the sticky topic.
  • Well after they told me it wasn't covered I ordered a PSU from Amazon, and that one is now installed and the NV+ is humming.
First check was power up with all disks removed - that came up OK with ERR No Disks which was reasonable :)
Now with the disks installed (yes, in the right order) it's booted and doing File System Check.
I guess the fsck could take an hour or so worst case, even though its RAM is upgraded to maximum.
  • FSCK complete, NV+ is up and running with the PSU from Amazon.
    Data appears OK.
  • ABBF and AC60 sent off to RMA partner today RMSD.
Maybe I'll see them before Christmas!
  • Yes, Santa (OK the YODEL courier) delivered a RND4000 today.
Second one is in the queue for despatch tonight.

UK Netgear web RMA tracking by ANOVO is useless.
Both my NV+ were delivered by tracked RMSD on 14/12 and yet the website still says "Returned: No" for my second unit.
Despite it being picked and readied for despatch tonight.
  • Add the courier YODEL to the useless list.
I assume the new unit should have been delivery tracked and signed for.
He just dumped it and ran - either because he was raining, or because he was late on his route.

Now have them all up and running.
