4.2.22 Mountain Lion

Hey all,
I manage the backup system at work. We have ~60 mac's backing up via time machine to a ReadyNAS Pro 6. For the past 2 years it has worked almost flawlessly (and the disk still hasn't filled!).

We got our first batch of machines that have to run Mountain Lion.
When trying to backup, I almost IMMEDIATELY get "Backup disk not available" (even though I've only just detected and added the disk).
At first I was on something like 4.1.17, so I upgraded to 4.2.22 as I know Lion/Mountain Lion was not supported.

However, the problem is still occurring.
Short of deleting the time machine share and re-establishing it (I'd have to have all 60 staff do a full backup again), what can I try?

Thank you!
-Rhys

  • I just tried with our other Pro 6, which is running 4.2.20 but did not have time machine enabled before, so it was a fresh config.
    The same problem occurred.

4.2.23 (currently in public beta) is due for release soon. Can you check if you still have the issue on that?
  • I could - need I worry about it being in BETA given these devices are essential to our enterprise's backup? Have there been any known issues with the BETA?
Have there been any fixes in 4.2.23 that directly address the issue I've described?

    Thanks,

Maybe wait for the production 4.2.23 firmware to be released then. This shouldn't be too far away hopefully.
  • 4.2.23 has netatalk updates, which is the AFP service used for Time Machine. I consider it safe, more stable than 4.2.20-22.
  • I just updated the ReadyNAS to 4.2.23 T6. No luck. Even on a fresh Mountain Lion install, I still get "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to WCS-NAS-1. The backup disk is not available." just moments after the backup starts.

What can I try? Are there logs somewhere I can look into?
This is rather urgent. Even the 2nd NAS we have does not work.
  • Ok, THIS is interesting..
I followed the instructions at viewtopic.php?f=71&t=59974 to setup a separate share and enable it for time machine use.. And it worked!

So perhaps it's something to do with multiple machines backing up to the same share?
I will have to setup a user for each staff member who backs up..
  • I'm doubtful about that. I have several Macs (10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 ) backing up to both a Pro 6 (4.2.22) and 516 (6.0.5) without issue. One thing I note about newer Mac OS X releases is that they seem to identify their sparsebundle by NAME and not MAC address. Are you sure that none of your Macs has the same hostname? (In Sharing settings)
  • Has anyone found a solution? I"m seeing this exact same problem with my ReadyNAS Ultra Plus. I'm running Radiator v4.2.24 and Mountain Lion. I can connect to the NAS just file using Finder and "Connect To Server" and Time Machine seems to be configured properly...but when it tries to create the first backup, I get the error "The backup disk is not available". Its pretty frustrating since it seems that my computer can connect and authenticate to the NAS just fine.
