Access my ReadyNAS Ultra 2 outside my network

I have bought a Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 2 and everything works great while home , inside the network.
But now I need to access the nas or the information in the nas from an outside location. How can I do that ?
Is there any settings for this? Does the NAS have any VPN support? Is the "Make this device a WINS Server" what I am looking for?
Should I focus on setting up a VPN or on the router ?
I just need to access the files from outside the network, from my job that is.

How is the easiest way to do that?

Thank you!

  • If you can get Remote working, that would probably be the easiest method. http://www.readynas.com/?p=1435

If that has troubles, you can look into VPN solutions, but that is beyond the device.

WINS server setting won't have any affect for what you are doing.

Yea remote desktop I can actually do that and I probably will do it to start with, but I still want to be able to access the Nas in the feature from outside of the network and thats what my question is about.
And from whats ur telling me , there is no VPN support to the readyNas device? And the WINS server have nothing to do with the thing I want right?

WINS is basically a Master Browser thing. http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=217

Ok So the besides the remote desktop, the next easiest option is to setup a VPN? On the router or on the Nas or on a computer that is always on?

Remote works most of the times I've needed it to, which is not often TBH. That said, it does seem troublesome on an awful lot of users systems. The related threads on here indicate this.
  • I was actually thinking of windows remote desktop, I didnt even know you where talking about any ReadyNas Remote, but that seems like a good idea, at least thats what you said "chirpa" and "InTheShires" also have some good ideas about it, so maybe its the way to go if not VPN?
  • BUT if i wanted to setup a VPN, should I set it up on the NAS, or the router, or on a computer that must be turned on?

-If your router will do a VPN, that is the most flexible. Putting it in the NAS would be the second best. You'd also need a client on your remote devices.

-you can also get https and ftps access by port forwarding. Do you really need cifs, afp, or any other protocols?
