APC RS 700 UPS and Infrant NV
I have an Infrant NV NAS with 4 Seagate ST3200542AS Drives. I purchased it in 2006 and have only replace the fan and updated the drives to larger capacity. I just purchased an APC RS 700 UPS. The NAS recognized the UPS when I plugged it into the USB port. I left the UPS Configuration set to Auto. To test this setup I unplugged the UPS and let it run. The NAS knows the power is out because it no longer responded when I tried to logon to it. The UPS indicated 55 minutes of power time. I let this run until the UPS indicated 8 minutes remaining. The NAS never shutdown which I expected it to do.
With this old NAS Netgear has minimal support. APC support isn't much help either. They keep telling me to connect the dataline from the UPS to a pc and download their Windows software. There is little to no documentation on what the NAS should do.
Can anyone tell me how to get my NAS to shutdown safely after going on the UPS power?

The threshold for "auto" depends on the UPS (in other words the UPS is telling the NAS to shutdown). - Larry_NukeAspirantStephen,
Thank you for the input. I recharged the UPS and then set to the NAS to shutdown at 80% as you suggested. I pulled the 120VAC power plug and the NAS gracefully shutdown at 80% of UPS capacity. Just as I wanted it to do. For the benefit of others reading this here is what I did after purchaseing the UPS.
1. Plug the UPS in to 120vAC and charge it for at least 16 hours per APC instructions.
2. Plug the interface cable into the UPS and then connect the cable to the USB connector on the NAS.
3. The NAS recognized the UPS as being connected.
4. Set the NAS to shut down at some predetermined level of the backup battery. I selected “auto” the first time and the test failed. I do not know what “auto” should do.
5. I then set the NAS to shutdown at 80% of battery on the UPS. I pulled the 120VAC power plug.
6. The NAS shutdown gracefully at 80% remaining battery life on the UPS. Exactly as I wanted it to perform.
I did not load any APC software on my computer or onto the UPS. I used what ever is loaded on the APC UPS when I received it. I did not load any software onto the Infrant NV NAS. Both are running native software. Thank you for your assistance.
Continued success,
Larry Nuke - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI believe that "auto" waits for a critical signal from the APC (so the UPS is determining the threshold). It is possible that the NAS is not understanding that particular message, it is also possible that the UPS would have sent it if you had waited just a bit longer. However, 8 minutes left feels a little close to me.
So you could try the auto again, and skate a little closer to power down this time. Maybe take it down to 3 minutes.
Or you could set the NAS to a suitable threshold. I think that is what I would do.
