Audit File and Folder access?
Does the Readynas 3100 (file server) support auditing for folder/file access on a Windows 2003 Domain?

- OOM-9NETGEAR ExpertWhen a ReadyNAS is joined to a domain; it is recommended to modify the permissions inside the DC.
Unless... what are you attempting to audit? - skeebozeAspirantSo if I choose a folder on the Readynas (joined to Domain) and go to Properties > Security > Advanced > Auditing and enable it will work? Just want to make sure this isn't another "Got Ya" with this device (linux) on a Windows domain.
Thanks! - OOM-9NETGEAR ExpertThat is exactly show you should do it. :)
Let me see if there is a guide you can use...
http://www.readynas.com/?p=1987 - skeebozeAspirantThank you! I've already setup permissions on my folders using these guides. That's not the issue. The issue is that this "Business Class" device does not support File and Folder auditing according to Netgear support.
"I understand that you have a ReadyNAS 3100 and you're wanting to know if it supports Windows 2K3 file and folder auditing. Unfortunately at this time it does not. I will forward a feature request to see if this can be added in a future firmware release."
This thing is pretty much useless to me now! - OOM-9NETGEAR ExpertHum... That sounds miss leading. :(
Did you have a case number, so I can look into what happened? - skeebozeAspirantCase #17792136
Thanks for the effort!! - GrievousAspirantskeeboze, I'm not sure where you might have misunderstood that we would support full windows security auditing via CIFS, but that is not the case. While it is correct that such auditing is a business feature, we've never officially supported that over CIFS.
However if you were to create an iSCSI LUN, then have a windows system on your network connect to the iSCSI target and share that(having your users browse to shares on the windows box while the data actually resides on the iSCSI LUN), you will indeed have auditing support since the windows server will be able to treat the contents of the LUN as if it were just another local disk. - skeebozeAspirantWould this also give me archive bit support again?
This kind of information should be available in the documentation so people can determine if this product will work in their environment before purchasing. - GrievousAspirantiSCSI support is listed in the documentation. As I mentioned, Windows treats an iSCSI LUN as if it were a local hard disk. You can do anything you want with it that can be done in Windows(while of course keeping in mind that it's on the network, so something like a defrag might not run well).
- skeebozeAspirantThank you! I'll start looking at the iSCSI features. If I can can plug it in to one of my servers and do my shares, backups and auditing as if it was a local drive on the Windows server then this device may work for me.
