Authenticating ReadyNAS with FreeIPA
I am debating the purchase of a ReadyNAS device and want to no if it can use FreeIPA for authentication in general and specifically for CIFS shares. ???

As far as I know, there isn't any native support for FreeIPA, but it the ReadyNAS does support AD.
So you could use the "legacy AD" capability of the FreeIPA server.

I have had limitted success using FreeIPA in places where AD would be used. Windows clients can use it to access shared resources, but they couldn't join it as if it where an AD domain for example. I have had good success using it in places where LDAP is used as it combines LDAP and kerberos and other services to perform its directory service functions.
Does ReadyNAS have any LDAP support? Actually there is a FreeIPA client for debian. I believe ReadyNAS is based off of debian linux. Would it blow the NAS software out of the water if it were made a FreeIPA client?

I really don't know - I'd always assumed that the ReadyNAS was using LDAP - but my knowledge about AD is limited, and I have no idea how the AD integration in the NAS software is implemented.
Hopefully someone from Netgear development will chime in.

Thanks for your input...
I think I read somewhere there was a way to run ReadyNAS in a VM. Maybe I can fire up one of those and do some testing.
