Backing up data between 2 NAS units?
Hi,
I am looking at getting 2 x ReadyNAS RND2000-100AUS units to use at seprate locations, my question is, is it possible to back up data from 1 NAS unit to another without a computer?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWould not recommend you use the Duo for this.
I would recommend two Pro 2 (RNDP2000) units using ReadyNAS Replicate (http://www.readynas.com/replicate) or Rsync over SSH.
Whilst you could use the Duo for Rsync this is not secure. So you'd either have to setup your VPN or use a community add-on to do Rsync over SSH (performance may be unbearably slow). - claytonbAspirantThanks, but the cost of the RNDP2000 is 3 times as much, not too worried about security, so will the replicate software work nevertheless? data transfer is minimal about 300MB daily
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredReplicate only runs on x86 NAS (e.g. Ultra, Pro). You could use that with the Ultra 2. Do note that after the free trial you need to purchase a license for each NAS if you wish to continue to use it.
I would recommend that if you can stretch your budget to getting the Ultra. - claytonbAspirantOk, if I go for the RNDU2000-100AUS, will replicate work ok? this unit is an extra $150, not for me but a customer that has a budget. I try to tell them that data is important, would have done just one unit as RAID1 but if there was a flood or fire they will have a backup at another location hence the 2 units
cheers - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredProvided you don't need the snapshot feature then it will be fine.
- claytonbAspirantSnapshot feature? also what does the license cost for each unit running replicate?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSnapshot feature basically allows you to backup your data frozen at a point in time.
License cost for Replicate is a bit over $200 per unit. - claytonbAspirantIn laymen terms why would I need the snapshot feature?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced User
It allows you to backup a NAS folder even if a user is changing some files in the folder. (The changes are not backed up). So it maintains availability while the backup is in progress.claytonb wrote: In laymen terms why would I need the snapshot feature? - claytonbAspirantok Thanks, the backup will be done at midnight so no one will be using any files, so I don't really need that feature do I?
cheers
