Backup between two nas 1100 is very slow

The company I work for has two nas1100 with 4.1.8 one is live and other is backup. We do the back through rsync at night when everyone is off the live nas. The two nas are connected through crossover cable and I see 1000mbit connection on network interface of ethernet 2 (ethernet1 is connected through a switch on the lan network). Now when I do the back up the transfer rate i get is between 2 and 3 mb/s. That's really slow, considering its connected through a crossover which i have changed 3 times already and also have connected through a gigabit switch with cat5e and no luck with transfer rate. I also have enabled/disabled jumbo frame still not working. Any suggestion or help is highly appreciated.

No need to use a crossover cable for a direct-connect. An ordinary ethernet cable works fine as the NIC is auto-sensing.

Rsync has to compare the file on the source and destination then it only transfers the changes to the file across. This can make the job appear to be a lot slower than it really is. Also the 1100 has a slow CPU.

What speed do you get if you use say a NFS backup job?

How much RAM is in the 1100 units?

When did you purchase the 1100 units?

    Hello,

Thank you fro the response back. I tried regular ethernet cable as well and on the ethernet 2 port interface I do see a 1000mbit connection. Below are the answers to your questions

I get about 11 mb/s sometimes even faster. Even transferring file from nas to my pc I get 13mb/s bursts upto 21mb/s

I beleive 512mb, I think thats what they came with. Is upgrading the ram as simple as just swapping out the memory?

When did you purchase the 1100 units?
The units are about 3 yrs old. However they do have a new hard drives. The reason that I even noticed the transfer rate is because I upgraded one of them with 4 sets of 2TB hard drive (hdd are 7200 rpm 64mb cache), and when I went to transfer everything from the other nas to the upgraded hdd nas.

Thank you again for trying to help.

RAM updates aren't supported. If you upgrade the RAM and encounter data corruption NetGear will be unable to help recover your data. More RAM may help a little with backup speeds. If you do upgrade the RAM be sure to run the memory test at least twice: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/is_there_a_way_i_can_verify_if_my_memory_is_good

    The 1100 has a 5 year warranty if purchased on/after August 21, 2007.

I would suggest you open a tech support case and edit the thread title (i.e. subject of first post in the thread) to include your case number.
