Backup not working
I haven't run my regular backup jobs for a month. In that time I have:
Replaced disk #1 after failure & resynced
Replaced disk #2 after failure & resynced
Upgraded to version 4 of FrontView
None of my previously existing Remote: Windows (NAS/Timestamp) backup jobs work. I get an "unable to access remote share" error.
I have tried:
1) Resetting up the backup job - still get "unable to acess" error
2) Swapping forward slashes for back slashes - still get error
3) Verified the backup locations are reachable from other locations on my Windows network.
Attached is a snippet from one of my backup jobs. Any help would be appreciated:

- jimmyg1AspirantI'm having trouble getting the devices to connect with the NFS.
I'm setting the Backup Destination as: Remote Server: NFS and the path as ITCHY:/admin
Is this correct? I have no problem providing remote access, or local if you'd like; we're not far from you. - ewokNETGEAR Expert

That looks correct. Make sure that the server is exporting "admin". If it is and you're still having problems, send me a PM and I'll send you the info for remote access. - haragsdaleAspirantSo is there anything new on this? I have both NV and NV+, both with latest firmware (4.1.4), have owned both for a while but have done backups from Windows PCs to the ReadyNASes manually up to now. Finally sat down to set up automated backups via FrontView this weekend (hadn't been able to face it up to now; figured it wouldn't be a 5-minute operation).
Sure enough, if I use Windows archive bit method and a path like //XXXlaptop/mydocs (and yes, mydocs is set up as the share name in Windows), I cannot access the share, either by using the Test Connection button or during an actual backup. I called tech support, and they said the problem is with the way my shares are setup, that this frequently is a problem, and that I should use Retrospect instead. But I'd rather not have to install and maintain software on each client separately, seems to me that I should be able to accomplish this fairly simply in FrontView.
I have gone through many forum posts and much Googling, and it led me to try turning off Windows simple file sharing, to setting up a new user under Windows with permission to do everything ("full control") and providing that login/password to the FrontView backup job, and bunches of other things. Made no difference.
So, just for the hell of it (or maybe because I read it here in the forum, can't remember), I went and looked for laptop's IP address (ipconfig), and if I use the IP address instead of the PC name, it works just fine, both for Test Connection and for the actual backup.
I suppose I can use a fixed IP address for the laptop, but I would rather not, for a whole lot of reasons. (Among other things, I need to set up quite a few distinct backup jobs across multiple PCs, and it will be much easier to track which job is which, including in logs, if I can simply read the machine name.) Is there a workaround for this problem?
By the way, the "works with explicit IP address" and "doesn't work with computer name" behavior is exactly the same on NV and NV+.
Thanks. - SirJohn2024AspirantThe problem about IP/Name resolution seems related to the specific domain name of the NAS and PC. I had the same problem with Vista (thankyou anyway for the workaround). I change the Primary DNS suffix for the PC to match the domain specified in the Network/Global Settings of the NAS device and name resolution start working.
Hope this help. - haragsdaleAspirantThanks for this, sounds promising. I'm on the road this week but will give it a shot this weekend.
- pdesimoneAspirantWas having the same issue with the "test connection" reporting "Error connecting to //nas/share" (coincidentally around the same time I flashed the ToggleSSH and EnableRootAccess add-ons). This is using "Windows/Nas (Timestamp)" Firmware is RAIDiator 4.1.6 [1.00a043]
My fix, thanks to this lengthy thread, was to use the IP address for the remote host (Buffalo Linkstation), set the username as admin (even though that user/account does not exist on the linkstation) and leave the password blank.
Back-ups work again. Hopefully this will help someone else out there... :) - Coolcat1AspirantTried your way, IP address and username as admin, still getting the same error. Did you install ToggleSSH and EnableRootAccess add-ons ?

Background:
Host: Windows XP
ReadyNas NV+
Firmware 4.1.6
Running as Administrator on the ReadyNas and on the XP host
I have been trying to get backup jobs to work via Frontview for a ~week now. Tried both IP and host name to no avail. I just got a test case to work, but it required the folder to be backed up to be shared. Why won't a non-shared connect?
The test follows:
1. Created a folder c:\aaa
2. Created a .txt document within this folder
3. Attempted to backup using Windows Timestamp
4. Results: unable to connect
5. Made the folder c:\aaa fully shared
6. Was able to connect
7. Backup was successful
8. Then made c:\aaa unshared and repeated
9. Backup failed (logs follow)

ReadyNAS Duo 2 x 1 TB, RAIDiator 4.1.6.
Created a folder named aaa on my C drive (laptop running Win7 Home), added full permissions for everyone.
Haven't gotten a single test to work, trying by IP address or PC name ("Error connecting to //192.168.0.8/aaa" or "Error connecting to //pcname/aaa").
Have tried many folders, many types of backup. Would love to get this working, any input is appreciated. - ewokNETGEAR ExpertDid you enable sharing on the folder or on the C drive?
