Boot FS check really slow, w/ one "gray" disk
Hey, I've a ReadyNAS NV+ w/ 4x1TB X-RAID and version=3.01c1-p4 firmware loaded.
It (fiiiinally) started acting squirrely this year...my fault...I had to rearrange my office, and took the NAS off UPS, and it was subjected to some power outages, and I was too lazy to get the 2nd UPS up and running (still new in a box right next to the NAS).
Anyways...right now it's going through its file system check, which is moving suuuuper slow, after hitting 53.6% completion. It hasn't "hung," per se; it just progresses very slow. In the last two days, it moved from 53.6% to 57.3%. Last week, it finished (after about a week), after which I dumped the log.
Currently, RAIDar picks up the NAS, but distinctly shows disk 3 as "gray," disk 1, 2, and 4 are "green." Meanwhile on the NAS itself the status lights show disk 2 flashing slowly, with the activity light flashing quickly, and the blue power button flashing as well.
Question: Am I to assume that disk 3 has failed? Is this simply a matter of swapping it out? I was expecting failed disks to trigger emails.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWow. The firmware you are running is over 7 years old: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7322
There have been a lot of changes since then and it can understandably be quite difficult to provide assistance for solving problems when such an old OS is in use. Once you have your system back up and have backed up your data you really should update the firmware on this thing and do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything). The latest firmware is currently 4.1.13.
It may well be that disk 3 has failed. Disks can and do fail at any time. They don't always give warnings through SMART errors either.
I guess you could try booting without disk 3 and if you still have issues perhaps try booting skipping the filesystem check as well.
How long have you had your disks?
Oh and I think RAIDiator 3.x doesn't support the full capacity of your disks. I think RAIDiator 3 is limited to 750GB per disk (though I could be wrong). - RoyGBivUVAspirantSo, when the FS Check finishes, I will taking disk 3 out and reboot. It should still have problems, though, shouldn't it? I mean, it's missing a volume, so it should be raising flags all over the place, right? The last time it booted, it did give me access to my RAIDar setup controls, but it did throw up errors like "could not mount XXXX."
At that point, do I just hot-swap a spare drive in channel 3?
I don't think "Skip FS check" is an option on the powerup menu in this particular firmware version. If I'm not mistaken, I get the option to check it off from RAIDAR for the next boot cycle. Boot options right from the power button include: short diagnostics, TFTP, USB boot, Long diagnostics, memory test, IIRC.
I will definitely back up and update firmware if this thing comes back to life. Yes, it's been a while. I'll be honest, the NAS has performed absolutely flawlessly for years and years with minimal intervention. The disks are also well worn, though not nearly as old as the NAS. I think the clock on them is roughly 700+ days. The previous set of disks were replaced without issue. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAh, you're right. New boot options were added in RAIDiator 4.x including the option to skip the volume check and to boot into tech support mode. One of the reasons why sticking on such old firmware is not a good idea. It makes it much more difficult to troubleshoot an issue like this should it arise.
It might be best to power down, remove your disks (label order), connect them up to an internal SATA port in your PC and test them e.g. using SeaTools for SeaGate disks, WD LifeGuard Diagnostics for WD disks etc.
Do you have a backup? - RoyGBivUVAspirantI did test disk 2 (the disk that was flashing on the NAS) and disk 3 (the disk that doesn't even appear to be recognized and is grayed out by RAIDar) with SeaTools, after powering down the last time it finished booting (last week). I didn't bother checking disk 1 & 4, bcs I was eager to see if disk 2 & 4 behave better on reboot. It doesn't hurt to do that before powering on again. Maybe I'll kill this reboot and get on with this set of things to do. It'll be new years before it finishes rebooting. :)
My backup is 2 yrs old. ah well. Amusingly, I am on a DR resiliency team at work. Ahhh, the irony. - RoyGBivUVAspirantInterestingly...disk 1 fails seatools! "Bad LBA: 1352454602 Unable to repair"
I had just assumed that disk 3 was the main issue. Hmm...attempting to block out the bad sectors now. I doubt this is recoverable, if disk 3 AND disk 1 are both problems. we'll see. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could try cloning a disk using dd_rescue but it may be too late. Your data may be gone.

Ya, that's my bet. but cloning's worth a shot. The vast majority of the stuff is backed up & replaceable. But I'd say the jpegs from the last two years are pretty much the target of what I'd be interested in recovering.
When I had finished all the drive testing, earlier, my results seemed odd. The disks that I initially assumed to be the culprit--namely the blinking disk (disk 2), and the grayed out disk (disk 3) passed. It was disk 1 & 4 that failed SeaTools, & Lifeguard. Definitely should have been checking in on RAIDar more often.
Well...this'll be slow & expensive, but hey...I've nothing better to blow bonus money on.
