Can a "downgrade" to a smaller drive cause my NV+ problems ?
Hi,
In fixing my previous problems with my NV+ firmware freezes, I replaced the 1st bad drive with a good one I had lying around. It seemed to work just fine, with the sync of the replaced drive just starting out fine. Unfortunately, at after 4 days of continuous running, it's still syncing. This does not seem normal to me, although I have to say that that the NV+ was almost full when I decided to replace the 1st drive with my new 1 tb Barracuda (which initially went well, btw).
Should I let the NV+ to run? Or is there something else I can check?
Thanks...Mike

- Marto731AspirantMike,
You have not advised the TeraByte size of disks you are using.
If you are having on-going NV+ v1 problems, can you open a support ticket, and send NAS logs to the agent.
It is good practice to have important data backed up.
Regarding inserting a smaller disk, this is something we advise against, and messes up the RAID structure.

Regards, Marto - ScuseMe1AspirantHi marto73,
The original tb size was
1: 1 tb
2: 0.5 tb
3: 0.5 tb
4: 0.5 tb
the 1 tb drive was the 1st 1 tb I was planning to use to upgrade all drives to 1 tb. But since the 1 tb drive broke ater 1 year (Seagate Barracuda), I put my old 0.5 tb drive back in to replace the 1 tb broken drive.
Unfortunately, I can't get to the logs, since the front panel says:
Booting
Disk 1 sync
RAIDar came up once and showed the same configuration as the LCD panel said, but RAIDar hasn't since come back to login.
I have another 1 tb ext drive that I had the NV+ saving to, but it's in EXT3 format. In addition, I'm not sure when the firmware problem started, because lately I've been using iTunes and iTunes Match, so I'm not sure of the integrity of the backup.
Thank you for the assistance. Please advise me what is the next logical course of action.
Mike - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI'd shut down, remove drive 1, and reboot. The system should then start (though degraded). Then do a backup.
After that I'd run diags (seatools, lifeguard) on the original drive 1. - ScuseMe1AspirantThanks StephenB, sounds like a plan.
Mike - ScuseMe1AspirantHi StephenB,
I followed you advice and removed the 1st drive. The NV+ rebooted and did a 5-hour filesystem check. Thankfully, the check came out ok, then I started copying my Music folder to another 1 tb drive I had laying around using an external drive reader. After about 6 hours, the copy finished. I'm going to run a compare utility to make sure the backup matches then NV+. If that's ok, I'll start buying the 2 tb NAS drives (WD20EFRX) that you recommended.
Thank you again for all your help.
Mike
