Can I factory reset the NAS without loosing data?
I have a ReadyNAS Duo (sparc, V1) with two 2TB drives, with Flex RAID-0 (no backup). I have SSH and apt-get enabled. I won't lie to you, I played with it quite a bit ;)
I won't go into too much details, but while trying to setup OpenVPN, I messed it up (I suspect the 'apt-get upgrade' I lightly ran). After awhile, the device became quite unresponsive, the SSH and the web interface were not working, etc. I did an OS re-install (holding the reset button for 5 seconds), and now the device is working, but apt-get looks seriously harmed, and lacking dependencies. Whatever I try to install, it reports an error with broken dependencies (a package locales comes quite often). It seems that the OS re-install didn't cleanup the packages that were already installed and things are not good (although the main services seem to be working). I read quite a few threads online about this problem, nothing seems to help. I am having concerns that something else might be messed-up as well.
Anyway, I would like to fully wipe the NAS memory and reset to factory defaults. But I have quite a few things on those 2 x 2TB drives, and would have a really hard time backing everything up. So, could I do the factory reset without loosing the data on my drives, if I still want to use the FLEX RAID-0?
Thanks in advance!

- EtzAspirantNo you cannot reset "factory defaults" without loosing data, as it completely wipes drivers.
You could try OS reinstall first as it is not destructive and if it doesnt help, then backup your data and do "factory reset" ;)
Instructions for this are found here: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... v_nv_x6600 - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf the OS reinstall doesn't fix it, you could also try overinstalling the firmware (download the image, and install it again manually).
But if you need a full factory reset you will lose your data and configuration settings. - billzabAspirantI would not try any kind of reset, no matter what it says in the manual, without backing up your data first. The cost of a USB drive is pretty low compared to losing your data.
- buynovAspirantI am not gonna lie to you - I don't like your answers ;)

I know what you mean, but have you seen a 2TB+ USB flash drive
Anyway, thanks for the clarifications and suggestions! I did an OS re-install and it fixed some issues. I can try the image re-install - good idea.
Now when I think about it, my main problem right now is that apt-get/dpkg is not working. Does anyone know how/if it can be reset? To clean all the cache and data downloaded so far, and download everything afresh. - EtzAspirant

Why Flash drive?
There are plenty of USB external HDD`s in the market up to 4TB in size...
Also its generally good idea to own one, to create regular backups at certain intervals , aslo USB HDD is pretty mobile so you could easily keep your "weekly" backup offsite for extended security.buynov wrote: Anyway, thanks for the clarifications and suggestions! You need probably re-install that addon as Sparc units dont have apt-get bundled in firmware by default. - buynovAspirant

I re-installed the APT add-on and it seems to be working! Thanks!
