Cannot log on to ReadyNas NV+ after upgrade to new computer

Hello,
I have a ReadyNAS NV+. My old Windows Vista computer died and I replaced it with a Windows 8.1 computer. Now, Windows 8.1 cannot see the ReadyNAS in File Explorer or under Network. However, RAIDar V6.0 is able to detect the ReadyNAS at IP address: 192.168.1.66 and shows satus as healthy, all drives checked. When I click on the Admin Page button of RAIDar, I get a Message that says: "Your NETGEAR Storage is not accessible from this computer, please check your network settings." To further compound the issue, I don't remember what the old network was or my logins to the ReadyNAS as it was several years ago that I installed the ReadyNAS and my password files were on the old Visat computer's hard drive which crashed and the backups are on the ReadyNAS. What can I do to access the data on my ReadyNAS?

  • Have you tried to open a browser (like Chrome or Firefox) then enter http://192.168.1.66/admin at the address bar?
Are you able to get a reply when you ping the IP address of your NAS?
Are you still able to access your data stored in your NAS via SMB?
Have you tried using other PCs/laptops to isolate the problem?
  • Thank you for the reply, Ixa.

    1. I use Chrome for my browser and Chrome replies with "This webpage is not available ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT" Chrome details show: Google Chrome could not load the webpage because 192.168.1.66 took too long to respond. The website may be down, or you may be experiencing issues with your Internet connection.

    2. I did get a reply when I pinged the IP address of the NAS. Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss)

    3. I will find out what SMB is and try it.

    4. I haven't tried another computer. I've got an old lap top in storage and will get it out to try.

Assuming that the NAS IP address: 192.168.1.66 is not a static IP address, you may isolate the problem by connecting the NAS directly to your Windows 8.1 PC using an ethernet cable. Then, set a static IP address of 192.168.168.x to your Windows 8.1 PC ("x" could be any number from 1 to 256 except 168). Then try to ping 192.168.168.168 and check if you will get a reply (192.168.168.168 is the default NAS IP address). If ever you get replies, open up a Windows explorer window then at the address bar enter \\192.168.168.168 then press Enter and check if you could access the shares and files stored in the NAS.

If ever the above steps won't work, then perform OS reinstall. OS reinstall will set the password back to its default which is "netgear1" without the quotation marks. Also, the NAS will be set back as being a DHCP client and this will not delete any data saved in the NAS. Check this link as reference guide: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... 6%2F600%3F

As per my instructions above, you could access your NAS via SMB by opening up a Windows explorer window then at the address bar enter \\192.168.168.168 then press Enter and check if you could access the shares and files stored in the NAS.

What firmware is being shown by RAIDar?

Since ping is working, there is no reason to try the direct connect procedure outline by Ixa. I'd also not do the OS reinstall just yet.

Do try \\192.168.1.66 in windows explorer ("computer") and let us know what happens. The direction of the \\ is very important.

If you have internet security software running on the PC then disable it and see if that helps. Check the network connection type, and make sure it is "private". If it isn't, then change it. (http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/98 ... s-8-a.html)

Also if you remember the workgroup your Vista PC was set to, then set the Win 8.1 PC to match (https://www.liberiangeek.net/2012/11/be ... windows-8/). "Homegroup" is not the same as "workgroup".
