Can't delete sparsebundle
I have been having problems with my Macbook Pro backing up to my ReadyNAS Duo since I came
back from a trip. I realized I was inadvertently backing up VMWare Fusion images as part of the
backup and these were causing the backup space to be used up rapidly. I tried to go into Time Machine
and delete all versions of the file but that never succeeded. I suspect that corrupted the sparsebundle
in some way so I decided to delete it and start again.
I log in via AFP= and see the sparsebundle. When I try to delete it, a window pops up saying "Deleting <name
of my sparsebundle>". It says "Items to delete 0", with the moving bar that indicates its trying to do something. It sat
in this state for 12 hours without any apparent progress.
I expanded the sparsebundle to do "Show Package Contents". I was able to delete the individual
files but could not expand the "bands" directory in the Finder window. I tried to delete that directory but got a
similar pop-up window saying "Deleting 'bands' and again it said "Items to Delete 0" and sat for hours. If I
stop the delete by clicking on the X by the progress bar, it takes about 2-3 minutes to actually stop.
I rebooted the ReadyNAS doing both a volume check and a quota permissions check; both were
fine. I then did a re-install of the OS by holding down the Reset button for 5 seconds while powering
on. None of these steps have helped.
I'm running the latest FW (4.1.8) and am running the latest Lion image (10.7.3) on the Macbook.
Since the original sparsebundle is huge, I need to be able to delete it to get backups running again.
(I don't have enough space to just rename it and create a new one. We use the same ReadyNAS to back
up other machines, and also to host iTunes so I desperately want to avoid Restoring Factory Defaults if
at all possible.
Help! Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

- oriordanAspirantQuick update: I said above that I was not able to expand the view of the "bands" directory in the finder window. In fact I can, it just takes
about 30 minutes for this to happen.
When I try to delete an individual file in the directory, it takes about 15 minutes to delete it. The small Trash window
opens saying Deleting "1a01" and Items to delete: 1 below the progress bar. There is nothing else going on on the ReadyNAS that I
know of (I've turned off backups from the other machine) so I have idea why it's so incredibly slow. It appears to be reasonably
responsive from the Frontview browser window I have open. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCreate a new share e.g. TMtemp
Login to CIFS as admin, and browse to the hidden ".timemachine" folder on the C share, you can do this by in the Finder selecting Go > Connect to Folder and typing "/Volumes/c/.timemachine"
Then also open in another Finder window /Volumes/c/TMtemp and move the sparse bundle to the TMtemp share. Then go into Frontview and delete the TMtemp share. This will get the NAS to delete the sparsebundle which is much faster than deleting it across your network. - oriordanAspirantThank you so much. That is very helpful!
- HenryESAspirantKudos to you MDGM, I'd been trying to solve this problem for a week, and was about to blow everything up and start over.

Sorry I am confused as I am not a MAC user and I am trying to do this on my wifes mac. You say "Create a new share e.g. TMtemp" How do I create a share?
In the second step you say "Login to CIFS as admin". Here do you mean, I login with Wifes usual credentials which are her name and password. Or should the mac have some combo of the user "admin" and another password that I need to login with?
Currently I have my readynas listed 3 times in finder under shared as:
ReadyNAS
ReadyNAS (afp)
ReadyNAS (cifs)
So I clicked the third one, ReadyNAS (cifs), & then on the "connect as.." button at top right and at the dialog enter my wifes credentials. But as this point all I see are the regular shares on the ReadyNAS. I cannot see the C share or anything hidden or sparsebundle related.
Appreciate it if you could set me the right direction. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOpen Frontview (web-admin interface of the ReadyNAS). Go to Shares > Share Listing and add a new share (don't forget to click Apply).
Now if you want to do this on a Mac, connect to ReadyNAS (CIFS) as the "admin" (Frontview) user not your wife's user. You'll need to disconnect from the NAS first if you are already connected as another user. Once logged in as the "admin" (Frontview) user you should then see the C share. Move the sparsebundle across as I suggested then go to Frontview and delete the TMtemp share. - loggerAspirantOh shoot me how did I miss that. Now I get you. So I successfully created the TMtemp Share on the readynas nv. It shows up as it should from both my PCs and Mac across the network. Next problem is that when I try login in as the readynas admin (now I get what you mean there too) I cannot see the C share. I see my 6 original shares plus the new TMtemp but no C share. ie the same as I would see if I login as a guest
I vaguely recall accessing the C share from a PC in the distant past. Is it perhaps better I do it from there?
Thanks for the help BTW. - loggerAspirantSome more details. I have a ReadyNAS NV with its latest Radiator v 4.1.8.
Security mode set to SHARE.
I read somewhere that changing to USER might fix things. But It will probably cause me other issues. like the need for setting up all sorts of login credentials that I dont want to have to do.
NAS has 835 GB (61%) of 1368 GB used & 531 GB Free.
Time Machine capacity is set to 400GB of (523GB Max)
Timecapsule backup from macbookpro (300GB) continually fails after running for an hour or so then saying insufficient space and something like 80GB required and only 50GB available. but it should fit.
So I figure there may be an old sparsebundle or something else hidden in the c share I need to delete to free space. But after getting nowhere with this now for about a day I am probably going to give up and back the mac up to a USB drive. But if I go down this path it seems there is no way to recover the space on the ReadyNAS NV short of factory resetting it and losing all my PC backups. As I understand it disabling time machine in radiator will not recover the space - is that correct?
net use t: \\198.168.1.200\c /user:admin gives system error 53 network path not found from both my win7 and xp machines.
Have tried changing admin pw in the hope it might bring the c share back into view for me. - loggerAspirantI am still stumped by this. Cannot access c on my NV therefore cannnot delete the sparsebundle.
Could I do it using SSH/putty having installed EnableRootSSH plugin? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSSH in and do
cd /c/.timemachine
rm -rf *.sparsebundle
This would delete all the TM sparsebundles. If you just need to delete one then you can specify the name of the sparsebundle.
Using SSH is the fastest method if you are familiar with it, but not everyone is comfortable with using SSH.
