Can't mount share in Windows 7 64-bit

I have PCs running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and a Windows XP SP 3. The Windows XP machine can mount my ReadyNAS NV+ share, but recently, the Windows 7 machine stopped being able to mount the share. I have the "user" security mode enabled and it has always worked in the past and I am trying to mount via CIFS. The ReadyNAS NV+ is running version 4.1.7 of the firmware.

When I try mount the drive via the command line, I see the following:

C:\ net use /user:test \\172.16.32.20\media
System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.

Any suggestions? The shares work fine in OS X and Windows XP, so the ReadyNAS NV+ appears to be fine. I suspect there is a setting that is now required on Windows 7 as a result of an update.

  • Hello,

Please follow these steps to resolve your issue.

This issue happens when NTLM is running version 2 or when the authentication encryption is too secure for the ReadyNAS.
Downgrading the NTLM Version from version 2 to version 1:

    Go to run > secpol.msc
In local security policy: Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level; send LM and NTLM
In local security policy: Network Security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based client: no minimum
In Credential manager: delete the credentials for the share (You could also use "Net use * /DELETE" from the command prompt.)

Lowering the encryption for the authentication:

    Network and Sharing Center
    Advanced Sharing Settings
    Files sharing Connections - Windows 7 uses 128-bit encryption \ 56-bit option

  • I can find network and sharing and change down to 56bit option but the instructions above is not happening.

secpol.msc returns not found, tried searching for it no luck.

I run windows 7 fully updated.

I have another problem, I have a xp machine which used to connect fine. I can't connect to my readynas duo with it either anymore because for some reason it has gone to a subnet of 192.192.192.192.

How can I reset the setting of the neadynas duo without deleting my backups, ie all the files on it?
  • I have made the changes to the security policies as posted, but the error remains the same. I will call the phone support.
  • Okay, I called phone support and was told I would have to purchase support to get the problem fixed. That's a bit disappointing since this is a configuration issue that should be documented.

I have made the changes suggested by readysecure1985, but the problem persists. Is there any updated documentation on how to configure Windows 7 to work with a ReadyNAS? Or are there are other settings I can change?

    Thanks.
