Copy/move between shares is sloooooooooooow...
I have SSH'd into my 316 and am doing cp and mv's... trying to move a bunch of data from one share to another (/data/share1 to /data/share2).
It's slow. Like, really slow (maybe 90 seconds per GB). Is this a limitation with SMB, BTFRS, Linux, or ReadyNAS? Is this to b expected or are there ways to speed it up?
Thanks,
John

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt is possible to reset the folder and file permissions on the NAS - this is often needed on OS4 systems.
If you want to try it, the process is here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... v%2B-v2%3F - Roxy1ApprenticeHey there, one step ahead of you. I tried that earlier even though I had never set permissions. Unfortunately it didn't work.
- Roxy1ApprenticeOk it allowed me to change the permissions of the relevant user group/owner via Explorer and now I can copy to those folders.
Still haven't found a way around the overall copy issue speeds. - Roxy1ApprenticeI am tempted to do an OS reinstall, but something tells me that isn't going to resolve this.
Maybe I should open a ticket? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAn OS reinstall should do no harm, but I don't think it will change anything.
- Roxy1ApprenticeI wanted to try the PHP+Xplorer though feeling that it's going to have the same result. Whatever is happening should be fixed by mounting the C volume as you instructed.
Would the computer being on DHCP IP assignment, and the NAS on static make a difference? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
It shouldn't.Roxy wrote: Would the computer being on DHCP IP assignment, and the NAS on static make a difference?
But of course it shouldn't be happening at all if you are using \\nasname\C. So its hard to say what might make a difference. - Roxy1ApprenticeTook the plunge, bought the PHP and got Ajaxplorer up and configured. Repository aligned with path, permissions set, goto copy data into the same share/directory and it's making me wait. In Win 7 I can see it moving the files (when I do a refresh each minute).
So.....something definitely not right :(
Then I try to cut/paste or 'move' (whichever) and it works. Anything inter-share is instant whether over Windows, SSH or Xplorer (oops didn't need it in the end).
Copy/paste is the culprit, is this correct? - StephenBGuru - Experienced Userajaxplorer is running on the NAS, so it will always do a real move (assuming you stay within the same volume).
Windows 7 should be doing the same if you are accessing via \\nas\C, not sure why that isn't happening.
Though one thing did occur to me - if windows is set up to allow off-line access to the files, then the PC is keeping its own copies of things. In that case, there are always copies being made over the network. So that might be something else to look at. - Roxy1ApprenticeHey Stephen,
To clarify, if I cut/paste or 'move' with Windows 7, it's also instant like Xplorer. It's only when I try to copy/paste within the shares, does it send it back over the network - and that's for Xplorer, Win7, SSH etc - thus offline file settings on any remote device would be a moot point(although for measure, they are not enabled).
