DEFRAG ON READYNAS ULTRA 2 PLUS ?
Hi everybody.....I would like to know if it's possible and or necessary to do defragmentation on the NAS's disks ? If yes, is there a specific tool to use ? I can't launch defrag from my desktop because it's Windows base (NTFS). In fact I ask that because I use a lot Transmission Remote ( writing so a huge amount of data which I transfer , when the download is completed, on my PC).I'm so afraid that my NAS's disks become messed up ! Any answer is appreciated. Thanks

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt is not possible to defrag, though you could wipe all the data (through a factory default) and reload from backup. This is a general ext3 filesystem issue, not limited to the ReadyNAS.
That being said, Linux does use strategies that keep fragmentation to a minimum. - michelefacciniAspirantThanks for your answer.....A question about X-RAID2 : the more you write data the more the disk expands right ? What happens when you delete data (for example 10 GB)....does the volume reduces or it stays with 10 GB empty ?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredVolume capacity is not set by how much data is on it. As you write data free space is reduced. As you delete data free space increases.
- michelefacciniAspirantWhy so is it so called expandable raid ?

You can add additional disks to empty drive bays (horizontal expansion and will only give expansion in 4-bay or greater ReadyNAS as adding a second disk to a single disk array adds redundancy) or replace disks with higher capacity ones (vertical expansion, will give expansion in all ReadyNAS).
See X-RAID2 in Action - michelefacciniAspirantOk ! I tought expandable was intended like for example virtual disks on VMware or VirtualBox which volumes expand as more data are written on them. Thanks
