Disks All OK (Green) but Volume is blank/missing
I have been using the readynas NV+ 2 for a few months without a problem but I hit a few error message when trying to configure it for TimeMachine use.
Shortly after the volume disappeared but everything else is showing green.
My RAIDar screen

My Disks all look good

But the Volume is not showing at all.

I'm not really sure what to do to get my volume back, please help if you can.

- vandermerweMasterCan you access your data?
Have you rebooted the NAS?
Do you have a backup? - pkraikerAspirantI'm going to guess that you have some error messages in the log, possibly drive error/failure? I have the same drives and have had a few different kinds of errors with them so I'm going to phase them out of my configuration.
What message do you get when you boot up? (no data volume?) - kamezvasAspirantHi Guys,
Thanks for the replies, to answer your questions:
Can you access your data?
- not through the NAS, I have yet to connect the drives to a PC.
Have you rebooted the NAS?
- I have rebooted many times all with the same result. no volume detected. The errors I get in the log are that the shares cannot be found.
Do you have a backup?
- Files are backed up through CrashPlan offsite. Any files that are not backed up can be replaced easily.
I have tried looking at the logs but not sure where to start I'm afraid. I find it strange that the whole volume failed. I expected to just see a single drive fail and the volume stay intact.
I did notice that on the first disk there is a Read Bad Sector 1 under the info link.
I do not have access to the NAS at the moment as I am at work, but I can upload the logs if you think it will help. I do not know what I am looking for. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHave you opened a support case?
- vandermerweMasterIm not sure if mdgm would sanction the following - see if he agrees.
If it is a raid volume:
Try powering down, removing disk 1 then booting without disk 1. If this fails as well, don't put disk 1 back without first powering off.
Do you have a spare disk to replace disk 1 if necessary?
You could also try ( with all disks in) an OS reinstall using the boot menu:
http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... _boot_menu - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI would not try those suggestions but rather contact support to see what they suggest.
The NAS is not getting stuck on booting so I don't see how booting without disk 1 installed would be something to try. - vandermerweMasterI thought perhaps the OS was unable to read the volume/ shares because of a disk 1 problem.
Let us know what support say and the outcome. - kamezvasAspirantThanks for the replies and suggestions. I think I will take mdgm's advise and contact support. The support case number they have given me is 21660360 but I am unsure whether any will be provided as I purchased the unit back in Sept 2012.
Additional screens below shown more errors that I have found.
The status for disk 1, note the bad sector count.
Also the moment it looks like a disk failure was detected in the log.
- pkraikerAspirantHow have you made out?
I had a drive fail recently and after installing a new drive the raid rebuild failed (raid-5 configuration). This result in the volume being lost, very frustrating. My solution was pretty dramatic though, and I have changed my entire NAS strategy as a result. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
This is very frustrating, and for a number of reasons happens more often than you might think. Rebuilding the raid array requires reading or writing every sector of every drive in the array, and that process often uncovers more problems.pkraiker wrote: ...I had a drive fail recently and after installing a new drive the raid rebuild failed (raid-5 configuration). It's one reason why many of us stress the need for backups.
How did you change your NAS strategy?
