Drive DEAD ?? Drive or readynas
Hi,
I have a readynas Ultra 2 with 2 3tb Western digital hard drives, last night the readynas reported one of the drives were dead.
I have run the drive through western digitals own software (Extensive test) and the drive reports fine, so when I put it back in the readynas it goes through the sync process and at the end reports drive is dead again :(
Is the the drive failing and WDC software does not pick it up or is the readynas going to die on me.
The system has worked perfectly for years with no real need to mess.
Anybody shed any light on this ?
Thanks Paul

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat are the SMART stats like for the disk (may need to use WD LifeGuard Diagnostics to check these).
- pauliesAspirantHi,
All smart stats are normal using WDC software nothing out of the ordinary, I am running another check hoping it will find a hard drive failure id rather not have a faulty readynas.
Im open to suggestions
Thanks - pauliesAspirantAnyone ?

- pauliesAspirantHi
How do I go about checking another drive ? Can I just pull the 2 drives out what are in there now and plug another in with no data loss.
Or do I need to follow a specific procedure.
Thanks

Then install the one you want to test and power up.
Be careful to return to power down the NAS before you reinsert the old drives. Make sure they are the only drives installed. Then power back up.
Any hot-insertion is treated by the NAS as a new drive (e.g. it runs a brief diag and then wipes it). - pauliesAspirantHi
Thanks
Last question hopefully, is ok just to replace the drive in slot one for the sake of this test seen that could be the faulty slot or do I need to replicate the system as it is now with 2drives.
Thanks Paul

Do you have a backup of your data? - pauliesAspirantHi
Slot 1 works OK with another drive.
So western digitals diagnostic tools say the disk is OK, readynas says it's bad.
Anyone know why ready nas would say the drive was bad but wdc says its OK?
Looks like I'm going to have buy another drive great excuse to buy a 4tb one
I can't even rma drive.
Thanks Paul
