Duo initial setup - setup is greyed out

I have a brand new ReadyNAS DUO purchased from Amazon. I have tried to install this for the first time tonight. The unit was supplied with zero drives as I wanted to install 2 x 2Tb WD drives which I bought new at the same time.

I installed RAIDAR from the supplied CD. I am running MAC OSX Leopard. Initial setup seemed ok and raidar 4.1.3 could see the duo ok. It had an IP address and I could see the MAC address etc.

The setup button was greyed out. I powered on and off several times but waited minimum 15 minutes each time. The blue power light pulses on and off and the 4 x green LEDs repeat this pattern (1-0-1-0-111). After 30 minutes there was no change. The fans are running constantly and the leds remain unchanged.

I assumed I would be able to complete at least the initial setup with no drives installed, then add first drive then add 2nd etc. But maybe this is not the case??

I installed the first drive - a 2Tb SATA 64Mb Cache - WD 20EARX Cavaiar Green. raidar could see the drive was in bay 1 but I still could not get to setup as button greyed out. It said the disk had a CORRUPT ROOT (probably true as its in its shipping state and has not been initialised).

I tried moving the drive to bay 2. Raidar recognised the disk had moved but otherwise no change.

I upated Raidar to latest version for OSX from the web - v4.3.2. But then couldnt see the duo at all so I downgraded back to 4.1.3.

My last resort was to do a reset to factory settings using the paper clip and hold power button down for >30 seconds.
After 5 minutes, Raidar could not see the chassis at all. 30 minutes later raidar still cant see the duo but the leds have gone through various different states. blue power led still flashing. disk 1 green led was on for a bit, then this went off and disk 2 came on. After 30 minutes the blue is still flashing and all greens are off. Raidar still cant see the unit. 35 minutes later and green-1 is back on solid.

The fans are running like crazy and have been since the very first power on over three hours ago. I'll leave this running all night and see if it changes at all.

please advise.

  • I would suggest to do a boot to factory default while this 2Tb SATA 64Mb Cache - WD 20EARX Cavaiar Green is installed. seeing CORRUPT ROOT means the NAS is thinking that the initial configuration is already done.

    To do factory reset you:
    1. Power down
    2. Ensure at least one drive installed
    3. Press and hold reset button with paperclip
    4. Turn on NAS
    5. The LEDs will blink twice. Release reset button after second blink (about 30 seconds)
  • Many thanks to mdgm and amac27. This seems to have worked and I now see the setup screen. Hopefully its now in the process of setting up a one disk raid set (default setting). I didnt realise I had to hold the reset pin for 30 seconds. I misread the instructions (it was late??!!) and held the power button for 30 seconds - and just did a single click of the reset pin. Curiously the fans seem to be running at max speed still but maybe this will stop when its fully set up. I'll let you know how this goes.

That does sound like it's working now. After you do a factory reset there is a 10 minute window in which you can choose RAID modes. If you don't choose a mode, the default X-RAID (recommended) is chosen.

When you add a second disk to a X-RAID array redundancy will be setup.
  • So this is now all working. I can see the volume is fully synched up and I have been thru initial setup. have set up a CIFS share and can successfully access it from Windows XP just fine. Did an MSBACKUP of my c:\ and sucessfully wrote 33Gb of backup file. So this is working ok.

HOWEVER - I cannot - despite how much I try, get a share advertised over BONJOUR to be visible via AFP on LEOPARD. All the instructions just dont seem to work. I have tried in Finder, select Go>Network>My Network>AFP but in fact under GO>NETWORK I see SHARED and in there I can see my duo. But it only shows CIFS shares not my AFP share. The share is ONLY advertised by AFP not both.

    So you're running 10.5 Leopard?

Have you ensured AFP is enabled under Services > Standard File Protocols and that AFP is enabled for at least one share under Shares > Share Listing in Frontview?

How is your Mac connecting to the NAS? Via ethernet or wireless?
