Duo v1 - help with new choice of HDs please
Hello all
I know there are lots of teccie people here who may find my post daft, but I am stuck and would appreciate some help please.
I have a ReadyNAS Duo v1. it has 2x1TB hard drives that came with it (one was free other was in the machine). This morning as I left for work I got an email from the NAS saying smart errors had gone from 0 to 1039 on disk 2. I presume this means its going to die soon.
I have about 800MB of these 1TB used so i was going to get either 2TB or 3TB replacements. I presume 3TB is the largest I can use?
My question is - I have Amazon Prime so wanted to order some new drives today - I have looked at the Hardware compatibility list - I think the Duo is RND2120? But what drives should I pick please? Best really for cost and quality so not dearest but not cheapest.
Then, I presume I just take our disk 2 and put the new one in? Will it matter its a larger drive? How long do they take to sync?
Sorry to sound so amatuer, but any help would be great
Craig

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired2TB drives are max for the v1.
Maybe a WD RED or a SeaGate NAS drive.
Can put larger drive than existing disk in but expansion will not take place till after the other disk has been replaced and the array rebuilt. - Thank you for your reply. OK so I will order two of these from Amazon and put one in Drive 2 first and let it sync and that I understand will still only be 1TB then I will add the other 2TB to Drive 1 (after the sync) and will it then resync both to 2TB or will I have to do anything else?

Appreciate your help again

craig - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAfter the second resync you might have to reboot once or twice before expansion takes place.
- Again thank you.
As one of the 1TB drives will still be OK - its just kept as a spare? I presume I just throw away the 1TB that had errors or can you repair them?
Thanks
Craig - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe disk with errors could be replaced via RMA to disk manufacturer if still under warranty. Otherwise throw it out.
You could keep the good disk just in case though it would quickly become out of date. - Thank you so much for your help. Two discs have been ordered and will be here tomorrow so I can swap one then the other. I really wanted to say thanks for looking at my issue and offering help. Virtual beer for you.
Best
craig - UPDATE: Two new 2TB WD RED arrived today. Hotswapped the failing 1TB SEAGATE and its "INITIALIZING" the new drive..
Email said "
Disk initialization started. The estimated time of completion is 17 hour(s) and 39 minute(s), at which time you will be notified via email. You can also check the progress in Frontview in the Volumes -> RAID Settings tab. Please do not shutdown the system while the initialization is in progress."
Q: how long should this take?
I then got an NAS email which said
"A SATA reset has been performed on one or more of your disks that may have affected the RAID parity integrity. It is recommended that you perform a RAID volume resync from the RAID Settings tab ( accessible in the Volumes page => Volume tab in FrontView ). The resync process will run in the background, and you can continue to use the ReadyNAS in the meantime."
What does this mean - i.e. do I do this before the Intializing has finished.. or wait?
Thanks - StephenBGuru - Experienced User(a) can you still see your data
(b) is the system resyncing?
Note you can see progress by hovering your mouse over the icons at the bottom right of the frontview home screen. Hovering over the icons in RAIDar can give you progress information also.
Don't try to do a manual resync if the system says it is already syncing. - Hi again
yes can still access the data... and when I hoover over the green light on Frontview bottom page for Disk 2 is says "Channel 2 - disc details and codes 1893 GB (Initializing)
?
Thanks - Doh! Just clicked on Volumes and it says
"
Configuration: X-RAID (Expandable RAID), 2 disks
Status: Initializing 44% complete, Time to finish 4 hr 53 min
So I will just leave it?
Thanks
