Duo v1 will not boot - No Disk Detected

Hi,

I've just been given a friends readynas duo to fix because I "know about computers" and have recently had assistance fixing a pro2, my friend would like to try and get the unit working, it has no disks in it currently, he says they were removed several months ago so there are no data issues to be considered, which is a bit of a relief. He did not know what level of firmware was installed, it's been too long since it was used last.

On powering up the unit the Power/Activity and disk 1 & 2 lights flash three times then a pause followed by disk 1 light flashing twice. From what Ive read this is a No Disk Detected issue. The lights flash immediately as you power the unit up, the power button is unresponsive after that and to power it off you have to pull the plug. It's not seen in raidar, there is no network link light on the switch or on the back of the unit. I've tried persuading it to boot from the front usb port using the usb recovery method and the tftp recovery method, nothing so far has worked. I have tried holding down the reset button, holding down the backup button and holding the power button to try and get some indication the unit is trying to do something else but it looks like it's in a coma.

If I connect my trusty serial/ttl cable the console also shows nothing (I used 9600 8-N-1 for the serial settings).

I have tried it with a disk in each bay and with no disks.

I may well have missed something but is there any way of resurrecting the unit or is it bricked?

Any assistance gratefully received.

Jools

How old is the duo? Is there a chance it is still covered by warranty [3 years for the Duo v1].
  • no idea, he said he'd had it for quite some time, the receipt must have been lost ages ago.

Probably worth tracking down, especially if there is a chance he's already registered it at support.netgear.com.
  • Hmmm, according to the warranty check it's not been registered yet which may not necessarily be a good thing. I've emailed him but I dont expect there will be a positive outcome on the possibility of replacement hardware without a receipt of some sort.

Whats your feelings on the state of the unit? Is it bricked? Can anything be done to get it to at least try and boot?

I would have thought something would/should have appeared on the console on power up but immediately goes to the flashy lights sequence. Is there another method of getting a console? I presume 9600 8-n-1 is right? It certainly seemed to work with the pro unit. Also, I can see another pin block, looks to be about 5 or 6 pins just above the serial console, anyone know what thats for?

I can continue guessing all night so it might be time to give it a rest until tomorrow.

If anyone has any tips I can try please feel free to share.

    Thanks

There is an old post here that suggests that you cannot create a console: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=22787

Though there are some posts here: http://forum.nas-central.org/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=236 and http://debugmo.de/2007/07/running-own-c ... -readynas/ that suggest it might be possible.

It does sound pretty bricked to me. Maybe PM chirpa, he might have some thoughts. In the meantime, hopefully the owner can track down the sales info. If it was purchased on line, perhaps he can browse the order history?
  • Hi, there is definitely a serial console, it's that slot on the back of the unit covered with sticky tape.
I've used it on the Pro2, a Duo v2 and an old Duo before, though it's possible I may have the wrong settings for speed/flow control. I'd usually see some crap on the screen when I get these wrong but I dont get anything.

I'll pm chirpa as suggested. it's not looking too bright at the moment, the chap says he might have shredded the old documents as he certainly cant find them.

Does the light sequence I described have any other meanings apart from "No disk detected"? perhaps like "give up it's really broken!"

    Thanks for the info.

    Cheers

  • Sorry chirpa, thanks for letting me know. I just read some of your other posts :-(

    I have pm'd siigna.

Not wanting to give up I have had another look. I found an old boot log off a different duo v1. You can see the system booting with the initial boot messages (see below).

The duo I'm having issues with doesn't even have the initial boot messages, it just goes straight into the flashing lights and nothing appears on the serial console.

Starting to think it's a dead unit. Is there any way to revive it? Remove the battery? put a short across a couple of pins? (what pins?)
  • There is still no sign of the receipt so we have to assume it's out of warranty as he thinks it was purchased sometime in early 2010.

This one can be a learning experience :-)
