Duo v2 NFS extremely poor performance
I bought Netgear Duo V2 with WD NAS (red) 2 X 2TB for backup my VM guest from Esxi 5 (Free edition) using NFS by ghettoVCB script. I'm able to create NFS share in Duo and was able to mount on Esxi host. They are on the same network with gigabit switch. I try to backup any VM guest using ghettoVCB script to NFS share and it is extremely slow. Sometime write 1GB or 2GB data and hang. I copied 24MB file took 8 minutes on NFS share and less than 2 minutes on SMB share. I use the same script to backup on Iomega Storecenter ix2-200 cloud edition using NFS less than 20 minutes. My Iomega Storecenter ix2-200 run out of storage and I bought Netgear Duo.
My VM gusets are Windows 2008 R2 server and Windows XP. Windows 2008 has one hard disk 50 GB(Thick format) and Windows XP has one hard disk 60GB (Thick format).
I called tech support and they don't have any call on NFS issue. Do anyone have any issue with NFS on Duo v2? Your help very appreciate. Thank you

- venziAspirantI have the same problem and I am very frustrated !
I have readynas duo v2 with two WD disk and try to copy files from my vmware esxi 5.1 to nas and speed is terrible slow ,
i don't use scripts only I mount the storage and copy to it by hand and it is terrible slow. And when I log in with ssh to the NAS i see that load of the device is about 2-3 and more ? There is some bug with this NAS device :( - kseinAspirantHi Venzi, My problem is still not solved. I update the new firmware RAIDiator 5.3.6 (arm) and still have issue. What kind of WD drive are you using? Green or Blue or Black ? I plan to test with WD black to see any solution. I just get the drive. I'll post it any update after the test.
- venziAspirantHi,
I am with green WD and I think the problem is not in the disks and the problem is with the NAS firmware. In SMB transfer it is ok.
There is something wrong with NFS implemetation , I am good in linux but for now I cannot find what is the problem ? Only think that I see is when I start transfer to Netgear NAS his load of the system becomes too high ? - venziAspirantHi again,
I made another test from diffent linux box , I mount the nfs share and start to copy some big file to the NAS and it was ok ... hmmm it turns out that there is only problem with combination between vmware ESXi 5.1 and NETGEAR NAS DUO v2 ???
This is strange maybe esxi uses some other tcp packet sizes or I don't know what but is incopatible with our netgear ?
Anyway I want to fix this problem and will continue to experiment.
:( - venziAspirantI think I manage to fix this issue , I add this parameter to the nfs share in this file /etc/exports :
async
and speed is normal now and I can use the nas for vmware esxi 5.1, and the whole line in /etc/exports now is this :
"/nfs2" *(insecure,insecure_locks,rw,async) 192.168.30.2(insecure,insecure_locks,rw,no_root_squash,async) 192.168.30.90(insecure,insecure_locks,rw,no_root_squash,async) - bbtheoryAspirantWow! What timing, I was having this problem myself and also came across this thread. I figured out the async option too and then came here to post my solution and someone else had beat me to it :) Excellent work venzi!!!
So, I too had to install SSH and then used Putty to login to the readyNAS and then the editor VI to edit /etc/exports
Once you add the async option to your share, it will perform as other services do on the readyNAS, and this performance was confirmed with my ESXIi host as well.
Once very important note however... I would recommend that you setup all your shares before you edit the exports file, because it seems if you use the readyNAS dashboard after editing, and add a share to the system, the async option will be removed from the exports file and will need to be added again.
Many thanks to the community, perhaps we should message the developers and ask them to make the async option available for NFS shares from the dashboard? - venziAspirantThank you :) , and yes - interesting timing !
wish you happy day ! - zintheferj2717AspirantWhat were the steps used to add the async perameter to the ReadyNAS? A downloaded PuTTY but I am unable to connect to the device. I get a network error: connection refused message.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOn a legacy NAS you also need to download and install enablerootssh from http://www.readynas.com/?p=4203
V1 (running 4.1.x firmware) is the "sparc" choice
V2 (running 5.x.x firmware) is the "arm" choice
Ultra/Pro (running 4.2.x firmware) is the "x86" choice
After you install the add-on, putty will connect ok. Use "root" as the username, and the admin password of the NAS for the password.
Of course be careful, since if you do something with SSH that does damage, Netgear can (understandably) deny support.
